Udupi, Jan 20: Recently two rare tumors, one of the uterus and the other of the ovary, were successfully managed by Dr Muralidhar V Pai, Dr Rekha Upadhya and the team.
Uterine Tumor: A 42-year-old woman with a child visited the hospital with pain and sudden distension of the abdomen in the last four months. She had a huge uterine tumor corresponding to the size of an 8-month pregnant uterus. Due to the speed of growth, Sarcoma (a rare type of uterine cancer) was suspected and she was evaluated for the same. MRI suggested a large tumor with degenerative changes. After counseling and consent, the uterus was removed intact with the tumor to avoid spillage of degenerative and possible cancerous material by Dr Rekha Upadhya. The tumor weighed 3.1 kg.
Ovarian tumor: A 23-year-old unmarried woman visited the hospital with a large ovarian tumor. Due to her young age, a rare Germ Cell Tumor was suspected and she was evaluated for the same. MRI suggested solid ovarian tumor restricted to one ovary with no spread to other places. Hence one-sided ovary with the tumor was removed by Dr Rekha Upadhya saving the uterus and the other ovary as the woman was young and unmarried. As per the literature, she will be able to marry and have children.
Dr Rekha Upadhya has been trained in the management of Gynecological Cancers at TATA Cancer Hospital, Mumbai, and is available for the management of gynecological cancers in the department of OBG. She is also a member of the team that takes care of cancers in women at Comprehensive Cancer Care Center of KH Manipal.
Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal congratulated the team for introducing and performing this complex surgery at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and said it gives more hope to the Udupi and neighbouring districts.
