Mangaluru, Feb 26: Senior Yakshagana artist, playwright, trainer and lead 'Bhagavatha' of Shree Durgaparameshwari Yakshagana Mandali, Kateel Mela, 67-year-old Purushottama Poonja is diagnosed with myelodysplasia with an excess of blasts with hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

For the last month, the senior artist is being treated in an ICU of a private hospital in the city. As per doctors, specialized treatment will help Poonja. The family is in dire need of financial help for his treatment which will take place over the next six months and cost up to Rs 30 lac including hospital charges.

Poonja spent the majority of his life writing Yakshagana plays and teaching the art to aspiring students free of cost. As an artist, he did not gain much financially and therefore does not have any savings.
