Beltangady, Mar 13: Carcasses of six monkeys were found on the border of the forest at Seetu-Kayarthody within the limits of Mundaje gram panchayat in the taluk on Thursday. Sighting of monkey carcasses has worried the villagers.
People who went into the forest to collect greens for their cattle gave information about the carcasses. Bodies of five monkeys were found to have scattered around in a spot as if they had met unnatural death. The body of another monkey was found 50 metres away from there.
Dr Karthik, Ujire veterinary officer, and Mundaje veterinary assistant, Nagashayana Rao, performed the post-mortem and sent viscera to the laboratory at Shivamogga for testing
It is suspected that because of the loss inflicted by the animals on agriculture, these monkeys would have been poisoned or trapped in some other way, and released into the forest later. Health department officials sprayed insecticide in the area to make sure that bacteria do not spread.
