Mangaluru: Drip irrigation to feed plants on dividers without wasting water

Mangaluru, Mar 20: The city corporation has not been able to water the plants on the road dividers regularly. Because of the summer heat, many of these plants are on the verge of dying. As such, the city corporation has planned to arrange for drip irrigation so that water is not wasted and the plants get water regularly.

In order to improve the look of the city, various plants have been planted on the road dividers. In some places, organizations and volunteers keep watering the plants while in some places they have been withering for want of water. The corporation, taking cognizance of this situation, has thought of implementing drip irrigation.

Initially, pipelines for the drip irrigation will be laid for the road dividers located in Mannagudda and surroundings. The corporation spends about Rs 22 for planting a sapling and Rs 39 on annual maintenance.

City mayor Preananda Shetty, said that in order to maintain the plants that have already been planted, the city corporation is resorting to drip irrigation. Initially, this is being implemented in Mannagudda and in course of time, it will be extended to other areas, he stated.

    The state of affairs is really horrible. They should have insight only then will things change. The countries in the middle east although lack suitable weather and conditions but have managed to beautify the overall country in such a beautiful way. Mangalore for instance doesn't lack the supply of wonderful red mud or water too. Just the lack of insight is the problem. This situation could have been handled at the time of concretizing the roads. Now for this reason they would again dig up the concretized roads so that they can fill their pockets. When the corporation spends about Rs 22 for planting a sapling and Rs 39 on annual maintenance then how are the plants dying who is eating the maintenance fee. Unless corruption is brought to a halt nothing is going to happen.

    Forget the road dividers, We go to the Kadri park for walks every evening and the neglect and disrepair we see in the park is frightening. There is barely any upkeep of the grounds except some flowering plants in a few areas. One reason the Toy train in Kadri Park is not finding any takers is because of the fact that there is nothing to see on either side of the track except dead and dying plants, piles of dried leaves which are never collected and once it gets dark nothing can be seen because there is no lighting around the tracks. Even the lighting on the walking paths is dysfunctional in several areas, leading to dark patches which are proving very useful for amorous couples. 8.00 PM seems to be the closing time (there is no signage announcing the opening and closing hours) because then we can see what seems to be the only park employee who goes around blowing a whistle and shining a touch into the dark areas to ensure that the people move out of the park. There is no bell or public announcement system to warn the visitors. Woe betide you if you are locked inside the gates. There will be no choice other than to spend the night in the park with the ghostlies and mosquitoes to keep you company. Maybe the Dinky Dine team will keep you fed if you shout out to them across the road.

    Drip not working: Grass is drying up. unkempt. Who is organizing this? who is managing and supervising? Grass needs to be mowed and maintained. All third class .. Half hearted. program s without programs... Discipline. Learn from Dubai/Singapore.

    People leaving around the city they doesn't aware of the beautification of public areas. even they are ready to destroy along with stray animals. but kudos to the people who is initiating it. it will take another 50 decade to proper implementation where the people spit, urine on public places without shame.

    I appreciate the good move of City corporations to water the plants at the road medians. However I have noticed that the water instead of watering the plants is dripping on to the road at various places. I feel some experienced person must be present while laying this pipe to ensure the purpose is served. Secondly the type of plants selected ( tall growing plants) for the road medians is causing risk for people who use to cross the road at various points, as the plant blocks the vision of the people and motorist alike. Secondly the slender long branches of these plants hits bikers riding close to the median. Suggest if they can plant shrubs of Crotten variety which does not grow tall and also looks fresh all the time . Am sure Horticulturist can suggest better varieties of shrubs for such places.

    Objective of planting trees beside roads must be to give shade to the city instead of decorative plants. Decorative plants will need long maintainance instead Tall and Shady trees can be maintained for few years and then after they shall grow by themselves and they are long term investment . Proper local trees must be selected which will also increase the water stable in and around the city . Ample green cover can also bring down the heat by few degrees.
