Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 15: Monsoon has gained in intensity in coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada as well as Malnad districts. The meteorological department has issued red alert for coastal districts on June 15 and 16 and orange alert on June 17, indicating very heavy rainfall.

The rains which started to pound Karnataka coast continued on Monday. Strong wind which accompanied the rain inflicted damage at many places. Rivers in the coastal districts are in full flow. Low-lying areas including those situated in the city were inundated due to artificial floods.

Mangalore and DK districts have heavy rainfall every year. Nothing unusual. Every local knows this. I guess these DCs and Administrative people coming from drought hit areas with zero rainfall think that this is something abnormal. Their immediate solution is "red alert" as if the rainfall looks at this alert and stops by itself. During rest of the year, none of them bother to create drainage system proper for such rainfall. Mangalore city used to have very large and deep drainage channels in city. All these have disappeared. The result is, all roads get flooded. Every year, same situation continues. Even a 15 min rain causes so much havoc. Let these authorities concentrate their efforts in building proper storm water drains instead of stopping at red alerts.

Particularly i am writing here with regard to the cleaning of dtainages before monsoon in order to avoid artificial floods.
