Bengaluru: Controversial coverage of Tablighi Jamaat - Channel censured, two more fined

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jun 18: On the basis of a complaint filed against three channels relating to alleged controversial coverage of Tablighi Jamaat, Times Now English channel, and two Kannada channels, the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) has censured English TV channel, Times Now while it has fined two Kannada channels, New 18 Kannada and Suvarna News, accusing them of biased coverage of the coronavirus infection. The authority said that the channels had targeted members of the Tablighi Jamaat and the Muslim community in general in the coverage done in 2020.

Bengaluru-based ‘Campaign Against Hate Speech' (CAHS) had filed the above complaints in the year 2020.The organization, run by lawyers, academicians etc had complained to the above authority pointing out that the above three channels had given hateful coverage on the issue of coronavirus pandemic. News 18 Kannada channel has been imposed with a fine of one lac rupees, which has to be paid to the News Broadcasters Association within seven days from the date of receipt of the said order. The channel is found to have violated the code of ethics and broadcasting standards besides principles of self-regulation.

The complaint against Times Now was relating to a programme anchored by Sakshi Joshi on the issue of Tablighi Jamaat wilfully sabotaging India and aired on April 2, last year. The organisation said panellists had targeted the Muslim community by making unsubstantiated claims and accusations.

Times Now on its part argued that the programme aired by it was not lopsided and contained different opinions and that it was not against the Muslim community. It said that the Tablighi Jamaat had been merely questioned. In its order dated June 16, NBSA which censured Times Now said action was taken for telecasting programmes that could cause communal dissensions containing some claims which cannot be substantiated.

The complaint against News18 Kannada channel was regarding two programmes broadcast by it, which were aired on April 1, 2020 where the anchor alleged that the congregation of Muslims resulted in spread of coronavirus in India. In the second programme, the anchor compared the Jamaat congregating to Wuhan in China. The channel denied allegations and asserted that the channel had conveyed to the viewers about the pandemic and steps taken by the government to control the spread of the disease.

Suvarna News Channel was blamed for seven programmes which it transmitted between March 31 and April 4 last year where Tablighi Jamaat was mainly targeted. CAHS said the channel had no proof whatever about Tablighi Jamaat members quarantined at various places seeking luxury things. Suvarna News has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 and also to delete all the links of the six programmes from all platforms including YouTube.

Some of the barking channels are actually biased and bribed by certain quarters to promote their agenda which any learned person will understand. It is no secret. The only way to tame these channels is to appeal to the advertisers to stop advertising through them, otherwise the public has to hold even the advertising companies responsible and stay away from their products. People against hate channels are in millions and can cause a do or die effect quietly.

Dear Ruben Pinto from Mangalore and Oz, I have zero interest in Tablighi Jamaat's functioning. However, at that time, our NSA had to go into that crowded congregation and give a safe passage to a controversial cleric. There were many Indonesian and Malaysian nationals living there beyond that allowed by their visa. The place was not only crowded but unsafe during pandemic and probably even today for pandemic standards. A lot of them tested positive. Pakistanis also had identical concerns. Last but not least, I would refer you to further reading on (a) meaning of Tablighi (b) what unites them across borders.

At the time of this issue, Corona was new and the name was synonymous with fear. Pakistanis were also complaining about this Jamaat for a similar congregation they conducted in Lahore at the similar period in much more larger number. In that sense, it should not be seen as hate, but we are a peculiar country. Kumbh Mela can be blamed, but congregation of Tablighi Jamaat cannot be. India paid heavily for taking the outcome of first wave lightly and leaving everything for chance. However, the million dollar question is, What is the reason for lower infection and fatality rates, just west of Wagah border? Pakistanis are equally irresponsible when it comes to noncompliance of COVID appropriate behavior.

First of all people of India have to sue the people who organised and performed the Kumba Mela. There was no mask, no social distance, which triggered the covid-19 wave 2. The people were wearing the mask and praying at Tabligi Jamaat , what is wrong in that ?. Please note that most of the TV channels and media of India are biased/purchased by government, that even the primary school children know the reality, which the so called bakths divert the attention.

What about Goswamy? He was barking so much on Tablighi issue which actually happened before lockdown was announced. Why is he not censored? Is the law different for him? Whether right or wrong is not important. Barking against one issue which is so minor in comparison with Kumb Mela and BJP leaders organising rallies is the issue.

There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we cannot protest. It's great to hear that “ Campaign Against Hate Speech -CAHS” tried to get justice in the court. Maximum channels were broadcasted news in a negative way to gain TRP. The amount penalized to channels is very less compared to damage created by them to Muslim Communities and Tablighi Organization. It would be better court increased penalty or 100 % penalty against revenue earned by channels on this subject. In addition to that court could have asked all the channels to ask apologies from the viewers for broad casting wrong news and giving jail sentences to who ever responsible for broadcasting wrong news, that would give mesage to indian citizen that always there is justice in the court of law.
