Bangalore: BJP Annexes Kadur, JDS Victorious in Gulbarga South

Bangalore, Sep 16: Results of the by-elections held for the two assembly constituencies have been announced. While the JDS and the BJP have shared the seats one apiece, the Congress has drawn a blank. By-elections to these two constituencies were necessitated by the demise of sitting legislators, K M Krishnamurty of the Congress party in Kadur, and Chandrashekhar Patil Revoor of the BJP representing Gulbarga South constituency.
Arunadevi Patil Revoor, wife of Chandrashekhar Patil Revoor, who had entered the fray as a JDS candidate from Gulbarga South constituency after she was disgruntled at the BJP’s decision to deny her a ticket and field Shashil Namoshi instead, has come out victorious. She has polled 3,532 votes over and above her nearest rival, Shashil Namoshi of the BJP, who got 35,898 votes. Ajay Singh, son of former Chief Minister, Dharam Singh, who was the Congress candidate here, could get only 35,507 votes.
In Kadur constituency, candidate of the BJP, Vishwanath, has wrested the seat from the Congress. He polled 55,796 votes, 3,987 votes more than 41,809 votes mustered by high flying JDS candidate, Y S V Dutta. In this constituency too, the Congress has been placed third, with its candidate, K M Krishnamurty, securing 30,330 votes.
Although the BJP lost Gulbarga South seat to the JDS, it is happy that it could get Kadur seat into its fold. The JDS, through this victory, has made inroads into Gulbarga district, considered a long-time Congress bastion, but recently invaded by the BJP.
Leader of the opposition, Siddaramaiah, said in Bangalore immediately after the announcement of the results that the result was affected by the differences between the Congress leaders. He said that the winning candidate from Gulbarga rode on the votes polled out of compassion for her. Siddu added that the party has taken the results in its stride, and that it is now ready for facing the future with renewed vigour.
