Community Leaders Appeal for Peace Ahead of Ayodhya Verdict

Mangalore, Sep 20: In an effort to maintain peace and order in the city ahead of the impending verdict on the Ayodhya issue by the Allahabad high court later this week, community leaders and heads of communal organisations have urged the public to remain calm irrespective of the nature of the judgement.
In a joint press meet held at Hotel Ocean Pearl here on Monday September 20, MLA U T Khader entreated the people to respect the Constitution and maintain the integrity and unity of the nation, while MLA Yogish Bhat informed that he had appealed to the leaders of both communities to abstain from violence and that they had pledged their support. He also warned that anyone found guilty of creating nuisance will be punished severly.
Addressing the media, VHP leader M B Puranik warned against emotional reactions to the verdict and said that people of both communities must welcome the court's decision with dignity. He cautioned against holding of protests or victory celebrations so as not to provoke violence. He also appealed to the media to exercise moderation in reporting on the issue.
The leaders of both Hindu and Muslim communities reaffirmed that they are determined to maintain peace on the day of the verdict in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Among those present were deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj, city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Muslim Central Committee president K S M Masood, chairman of Zeenath Baksh Jumma Masjid Committee and chancellor of Yenepoya University Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, Sharan Pumpwell, Vinay Shetty, Jagadish Shenava and others.
