Taliban to declare 'Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan'

Kabul, Aug 16 (IANS): The Taliban, who on Sunday entered capital, Kabul, are on the verge of declaring that they have taken control of the country and that it is now the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, according to Press Association reports citing a Taliban official.

The declaration is expected to be made from the presidential palace in Kabul following the departure of Afghanistan President, Ashraf Ghani, earlier, who apparently fled, initially to Tajikistan. His current location is unconfirmed, the Guardian reported.

The Taliban are claiming to have taken over the presidential palace in Kabul, BBC reported.

President Ghani left the country earlier on Sunday - but the exact situation at the palace is still unclear.

According to local journalist Bilal Sarwary who spoke to two Afghans involved in direct negotiations, part of the agreement was that Ghani would join the transition of power ceremony inside the palace - but instead he and his senior aides left the country.

"Palace employees were then reportedly told to leave and the palace was (left) empty," the aides said. The Taliban later told a global wire service that they had taken it over.

There has been no confirmation from government officials.

Two officials from the Taliban told the wire there would be no transitional government following their lighting sweep across Afghanistan that led back to the capital two decades after the group were overthrown by US-led forces.

Ghani's destination was uncertain: a senior Interior Ministry official said he had left for Tajikistan, while a Foreign Ministry official said his location was unknown and the Taliban said it was checking his whereabouts.

The American flag at the US embassy in Kabul has been removed, according to numerous media reports. The US Ambassador and the flag are reported now to be at the airport in Kabul, the only way out of Afghanistan with the capital surrounded by the Taliban and road crossings controlled by the extremist insurgency forces.

The last reports were that the US Embassy would be closed by Tuesday and was being staffed by a skeleton-level team. The situation on the ground is not completely clear, Guardian reported.

There is "pandemonium" at the airport, according to CNN's reporter in Afghanistan, Clarissa Ward. The road to the airport is choked with traffic as Afghan people desperately try to reach it to take or seek a flight out.

This could account for the so-far unconfirmed and isolated reports of gunfire - ie chaos in the approach to the airport and frustration boiling over.

I am not a supporter of Taliban. But it is their country and we should leave it to them to decide what they want to do. People from outside should not have occupied their country for so many decades .

If they are left fee like this... definitely they will take over all other countries and human beings will have to suffer under their control... I can still see people supporting the way of their life which is really ridiculous. IF the world does not get together and fight against them we will have to face the wrath...

Do you think it will b possible? Two Super Powers failed. Not one year or two years. Both in together 30 years they fought, what is the end result. If one goes and fight there such countries economy will collapse but they won't be able to win. The reason, they are master's in leading very simple life and they damn care for any worldly gliters. To such people defeating is impossible. One cannot allure them with worldly materials

@ Jhanavi... Yes you are right..... Even though I am staunch supporter of Congress & a critic of fanatic religious groups..... Today if UPA was in power means today we would have seen celebrations of take over in India..... Still from some comments from this forum we can clearly see how these people are supporting... There is one newspaper in costal which says its stand as a voice of minorities & backward class. During UPA it is refer to Taliban as fighters, even though India was fighting against it.... Now under BJP they refer them to terrorist group... This is their double standard... Dr. Ambedkar clearly said some people will be loyal to the country even though you provide anything for them... Even though I criticize Modi, but under him below things have improved... 1. No major terror attacks, no sleeper cells active... 2. No protest against Isreal... 3. Terror supporter Zakir Naik forced to leave country..

"I can still see people supporting the way of their life which is really ridiculous". yes and these people mostly are in India. These same people raised their voice for Palestine but are mum for Afghans. The world is in no mood to come together deliberately because even they have their own agenda. As you rightly said they will take over all other countries and its not a rocket science as long as we have parties like khangress, TMC. Who only think of power. We need to prepare our next generation because the day is not far...... just see the disagrees for this comment and you will know.
