Mangaluru: Lawyer grows jasmine during lockdown, earns Rs 85,000

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 19: Kiran Devadiga (36), a city-based lawyer by profession, cultivated jasmines (Shankarapura variety) in the balcony of her home. She began the cultivation in March last year.

Jasmines are grown in different parts of the country and areas are known for growing unique varieties which are different from others in size, fragrance, looks etc.

Kiran was interested in farming but because she grew up in a city, she could not afford to do that. During the lockdown, she had ample time which she utilized to rekindle her interest in farming. She diverted her energy and interest to cultivating jasmine. She was laughed at by her own family members when she explained to them about her plan to raise jasmine flowers.

Kiran studied about cultivating jasmines and thought of having her farm on the terrace. Once she found out online the methodology of terrace gardening, the other aspects were easy. She found that patience and interest in cultivation are the only two things which are needed to become a farmer. She was aided by the owner of a private nursery in the city to identify the plants which can be grown. She then zeroed in on jasmine cultivation. She bought 90 plants at Rs 3,150 and bought 100 earthen pots, which were shifted to the terrace. She got help from YouTube users having experience in terrace gardening.

Kiran now proudly says that her family members who laughed at her idea are now proud of her. They are helping her to raise the jasmine plants. They too are inspired by Kiran's success in earning Rs 85,000 from this hobby, to raise their own jasmine farms.

Kirana I saw your achievement in Namma TV , Facebook and other media as well.I read in some other source is that you can earn Rs 15K per month but here it is mentioned Rs 85,000/-.This amount is for anum or per month. However I admire your interest, hobby especially in farming coz basically I have born and brought up in agricultural family,I know the hardship and fragrance of the result derived after your efforts. I am very much happy that you have evinced an interest in farming jasmine and few months back you had shown interest in growing vegetables in your terrace. All the best for your efforts and best of luck as well.God bless you and stay blessed to accomplish all your dreams. You are an creative person and you will use always your spare time for productive purpose, rather than spending time on unproductive things. Good night

Growing Jasmines is a laborious job but a family can lead a comfortable life if they work hard on it. I am sure if a family has 3 cents of spare land to grow Jasmine plants nearly 50 plants, they need not work for others for sure. But forget about going to any functions like weddings or even funerals before 1 P.M. Which is not possible if you do not have external help.

Sometimes it is good for your health and well being to leave the prejudice and hate for Modi and appreciate the good things happening around in India. India is not Modi alone there are vast number of good people working here for the development of the country and increasing their income.

"Just a balcony at your house." And hard work - she can continue her profession and side by side ( if time permits) can earn extra bucks as a jasmine grower.

Good hobby; that gives fair returns to the time invested as well. Some people realise their multiple talents later ! By bettering infrastructure, if farmers / growers get direct access to wholesale markets , Malls etc. they would get better returns to their products, time, labour and investment. More people would choose it as their career option. Would be better for environment and economy as well.

In these very columns, we heard during last lockdown that traditional flower growers in Shankerpura suffered, inspite of them being in the trade from decades, but its heartening to know that someone suddenly grew flowers in her terrace and prospered
