Mangaluru Aug 24: The crisis in Afghanistan has severely affected Afghan nationalities residing in India including the student community. Recently, 58 Afghan students in Mangaluru met police commissioner N Shashi Kumar and kept forth their requests for their safe stay in the country.
The registration of Afghan students in Mangalore University for various courses are on the rise for the next academic year 2021-22. In the existing batch, there are 53 Afghan students among which 22 are pursuing PhD, 13 post graduate and 18 under graduate. While for the next year, the registration of Afghan students has witnessed a massive rise with 156 among which 31 are under graduate, 111 post graduate and 14 PhD.
Registrar (evaluation) Prof P L Dharma said, “Students from various countries are opting Mangalore University for studies. We are fulfilling the demands of foreign students. As per government protocol, the registration process has been done. The alumni of the university are working as brand ambassadors for this university. We have good facilities, the quality of education is high, and publications and research are good as well. It is our responsibility as well to take care of foreign students. Some of them have come along with their families. As many as 156 students registering themselves is a good sign and from our side we will give complete support to the students. Our staff are in touch with the students and giving them moral support.”
One of the students from Afghanistan, Abdul Basit said, “Due to insecurity in Afghanistan, several students are coming to India for their education. They do not think about the quality of education, but they just want to come out of Afghanistan due to the fear of the Taliban. Lot of my friends back home in Afghanistan enquire about my studies and scholarship as they are aware that they cannot study peacefully due to the present situation there.”
