Puttur: Devaramaru Gadde vehicle parking lot earmarked only for Hindu devotees

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Aug 31: The managing committee of Lord Mahalingeshwara temple here has taken a decision to allow parking of vehicles of Hindu devotees alone in the Devaramaru Gadde in front of the temple. The committee decided to bar without exception the parking of vehicles by others in the said space.

Those who are in the habit of parking their vehicles here and going away on other work have been warned of legal measures.

In the spacious field in front of the temple, not only the devotees coming to the temple, but also many others used to keep their vehicles. Hereafter, they cannot leave their vehicles in the temple's parking space. In the history of the temple, for the first time, a decision to allow only Hindu devotees to park their vehicles has been taken. A notice about this decision has been displayed in the Panchakshari Mantap outside the temple.

The notice mentions that the temple belongs to Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments department and that the Hindu devotees alone have the provision to park their vehicles in the temple parking space. The people have been informed that parking of vehicles by others has been compulsorily banned and that if any others are found to have parked their vehicles here, they will face legal steps.

It is ok to restrict the temple parking area to park vehicles 'who visit' the temple. But the using the term 'Hindu-only' is not sufficient.

Well said... We have visited so many temples in India, and this is something which should have been thought of before taking such a drastic decision with regards to the parking. This just goes to show, that we Human Beings have a long way to go for Being Human. God bless us all.

How do they identify by the color of the vehicle or who is driving the vehicle. Most of the owners appoint any Indian national to their vehicle as driver.

If the ground in front of the said temple belongs to the temple authorities then something like this can happen. Also it could have been handled better by wording it differently. What if a Hindu family hires a vehicle of the different faith? you can not stop them right? Even if other religious people wish to visit the temple, I think this decision sends a wrong signal to society at large and hurts sentiments of other religion people. Temple, church, mosque or a gurudwar or even a Jain Mutt, these are different places of worship by different religions. But at large we all have learnt that God is one, he is one almighty, with different names and worshiped differently. So why this kind of a decision is taken is a disturbing question. This will only disturb the harmony of our society and bring unrest among people.

They have full rights only if land belongs to them. We can see people parking vehicles at main junction and go for work by bus. They park only for the safety for theyr vehicle. I don't think anything harm to other.

I think the temple committee made a mistake with the wording. I think it was supposed to say parking only to people who come to visit the temple.

Sri Krishna Mutt, Udipi, gives lunch to about 30000 people daily and many other different religion people partake in the meal. When the Head of the Mutt was asked, why he allows others, he said "whoever comes here, we take them as the Krishna Bhakt". There are so many Hindus go to Mount Mary Basilica, Mumbai, St Michael Church,Mahim and St Lawrence Basilica, Attur,Karkala. Irrespective of religion, genuine devotees can park the vehicles there. Though, the managing committee has full right to say in the above subject temple, since people of other religion also go to pray there,if they would have put the board saying "Only devotees can park the vehicles here" would have been better, in my view. Of course, people parking the vehicle there and going out for other business is wrong, irrespective of religion.

There are many ways for the temple committee to convey this message without hurting religious sentiments. They can simply say "parking for a maximum time of half an hour". " parking for temple visitor's only" etc. Bye the way, does the number plate mention the religion of the owner? What if a Hindu family hires a Muslim driver to drive to the temple? Best way for the temple committee to escape from the shame and humiliation is to apologize right now and correct the statement!

If it is the private property of the temple then they have all rights to take this action and we must support it. Why should anyone park their vehicles in the temple property and cause inconvenience to the devotees?

Unless specifically mentioned, any person can visit any religious place and parking for visitors should be allowed, but at the same time those owning or visiting commercial or residential buildings in the neighborhood should not be allowed to park in this place, each building has to make adequate parking arrangements for themselves and their clients.
