Bengaluru, Sep 2: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has asserted that there will be no compromise on protecting the State’s internal security.

He was addressing a function to mark the inauguration of Gandhi Bhavan building, Police Public School and GMIT Central Library in the campus of GMIT in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Davangere on Thursday.

Bommai said Karnataka has to play its role in tackling the problems faced by the country and it was the duty of the State Government not to allow terrorists and extremists to set their base in the South. The efforts and close coordination of the State police with NIA has helped in nabbing several extremists, he said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that Karnataka has taken pro-active steps for establishing a mobile forensic laboratory and appointing crime scene officers after the visit of the Union Home Minister to the State last time. The Home Department is working with close coordination with the Union Home Ministry.

“I am happy that the Union Home Minister inaugurated the Police Public School in Davangere,’’ he said and mentioned the building was constructed by utilising the corpus of police benevolent fund. The police public school is modelled on the military schools in the country, he said.

The Chief Minister said the Gandhi Bhavan is being inaugurated in Davangere by Amit Shah, who hails from the State of Gujarat which gave birth to Mahatma Gandhi.

Bommai said the State Government has announced 14 ambitious Amrit Mahotsav programmes to mark the 75th anniversary of Indian independence and mentioned that an official order on implementing the programmes has already been issued.

“Ours is not a government that believes in talking but doing. We believe in deeds and not empty words,’’ the Chief Minister said and pointed out that the Union Agriculture Minister will be inaugurating the scheme for distributing Rs 1000 crore of scholarships to the children of farmers for pursuing higher education from PUC till post-graduate studies. As many as 20 lakh children of farmers will be benefited by the scheme, he said.

The State Government has proved that it is a pro-poor government enhancing the monthly pensions under Sandhya Suraksha scheme and widow pensions as well as pensions for the physically challenged. All these programmes were announced by the former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and are being implemented under his guidance, he said.

The Chief Minister praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah and said the boldness of Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel, who also hails from Gujarat, can be seen in him. Sardar Patel fought for preserving the unity and integrity of the country and Amit Shah is also working with the same single-minded goal, he said.

Bommai described the abrogation of Article 370 as a step for protecting the unity and integrity of the country and also to ensure that the plight of women and children in Afghanistan was not repeated in the country.
