Mangalore: Unknown Miscreants Demolish Air Crash Victims' Memorial

Mangalore, Oct 5: To their horror and disbelief, the people and authorities concerned found today that a memorial built at the site of the air crash of Air India Express flight IX 812 from Dubai on May 22 this year at Kenjar near Bajpe airport, has been demolished by miscreants. Apparently, boulders were hurled at the memorial to destoy it. There is neither any inkling about those who were behind this heinous act, nor could the motive behind this act be ascertained.

It may be recalled that six black granite slabs with the names of all the 158 ill-fated passengers and six crew members had been installed on an elevated structure at the crash site. It was unveiled on July 27 this year by union civil aviation secretary, M M Nambiar. At the time of unveiling, it was hoped that the names of the victims will go down the annals of history, the memorial will constantly remind the people of this ghastly tragedy and the bitter lessons learnt from it.

Investigations are being undertaken and steps needed to be undertaken are being discussed. Perhaps, the authorities may consider erecting the structure again by providing protective shield to the memorial.

It is horrible to see such a heartless distruction. I think the person/s who did this might have lost their sense in the recent thunder, lightening and rain. No able minded creature will not do this act. We have to pray for this distructive people so that better sense prevails.

i have a feeling it's someone who's relative or friend would have died in the crash because the person is probably dissatisfied with the range of unanswered questions about the crash or hurdles that they might be facing in receiving compensation etc hence the person probably felt that by just erecting a merry memorial for the victims is not going to solve the real issue at hand.

I have full symphaty for the family members of the victims. You people have not expressed any symphaty for the family members other than simply writing non sence. Tell me why do you need a memorial on public places? I have no objection if you constrcut a memorial for all your near and dear ones at your private place/property, whenvever they die. The question here is why memorial only for aircrash victims why not for train vitims and bomb blast victims? Do you have any answer. ? @Payal - is there any rule that a memorial be built for air crash victims ?

From the time of this crash I very much wanted to visit the crash site as there were many people whom I had personally known among the dead.

But it is only a week now since I visited this place and it was a touching experience. With great sorrow I remembered Ashita Bolar and family (3 people), Mohd. Ziad and family (4 people), co pilot Harbinder (though I had not met him personally) who was in contact with me over phone in connection with a rental house for him, the last call being barely 16 hrs before his death.

After coming home I repeatedly played the last minute CVR transcript and felt so sorry about the panicky situation the pilot and the co pilot went through and the agonising death they and the others met.

The memorial is on the road side just above the gorge in which the plane fell. It is apt that the authorities chose the crash site itself to raise the memorial. Erecting it elsewhere would lose its significance. If the reason for destrucion is that the site is somebody's private land (which I don't think so as the memorial is on road side)the owner should be taken into confidence and if it is anything else like political, insufficient compensation, hooliganism etc it should be firmly dealt with and memorial re- erected with metal plaques instead of granite.

Lastly, for those who try to compare the dead to sports person or achievers, please know the difference between remembering the dead and honouring the achievers. You need a humane heart to know this.

What more can we expect if people do not allow a Plane Crash Memorial to survive atleast for 100 days. It is aweful and disheartening to believe if there can be people who can stoop down to this level. This incidnet in no way makes me feel that we are a civilised country. We are going back to the primitive ages but with sophisticated technology. No wonder Mangalore is no longer safe and in the days to come situations can be much worse.

People have ample time to first think about such a criminal act and then commit the same withour any scare. This shows where does the so called INDIA HAS MOVED ON mantra has its veracity. The media needs to use the same more thoughtfully. Illiteracy, unemployment, weak law and order, avarice politics loom at large and are still rule of the day and hence are the root causes of all these tragedies. Hope and pray that this does not repeat again and the criminals are bought to books.Law and order should be viwed seriously and should leave a serious presedent if India has to move on.

Although I condem this kind of act, I feel more important is settlement of compensation than the monument. People who have lost their loved one definitely build a monument of their own anyway.
