Puttur, Sep 9: This time, in spite of the prevalence of coronavirus infection, the government has allowed the people to celebrate Ganeshotsava. The organizers are busy ensuring that they stick to corona-related guidelines. At this time, the demand for nature-friendly Ganesha idols is quite high. The ones made of clay alone are very much liked by the people of Dakshina Kannada district.

In the past, people used to make Ganesha idols by using only the clay and immerse the same at the end. Over a period of time, the method of making the idol has undergone a change. In the past, artisans used to put together the clay required to make the idols two months in advance. Now, many people bring plaster of Paris and other chemicals a day before the festival, make the idol and discharge them in water. But the chemicals used for the idol are not good for health and the idols discharged in seas and rivulets spread pollution.

However, in most places of Dakshina Kannada, clay idols are made. They also use natural colours. Taranath Achary and his family members from here work together to make idols.

This family has been making idols for the last 73 years. A few young men also support the initiative and get involved with making the idols.

All sizes of Ganesha idols are made here and idols are sent to far off places. It is appreciable that the people as well as artistes like Taranath Achary are committed to the principle of conserving this art form without damaging the health of the people. They are also aware of the damage unleashed by the immersion of poor quality materials.
