Mangaluru: 'Smart' shelters turn into safe accommodations for nomads, beggars

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 3: Under the Smart City project, bus bays and passenger shelters have been built by spending lacs of rupees in the city. These shelters have been turning into safe havens for nomads and the beggars again.

The number of nomads had become considerably less during the lockdown period but now they have made their appearance again at the bus shelters. For several, bus shelters have turned into their homes where they have their food and sleep. Because of their presence, the passengers do not get a place to sit. The new model bus shelters built under the smart city seem to have become the favourite choice of the nomads.

Footpaths and shelters on the clock tower-car street road, footpath of Nehru Maidan and bus shelters on the other side had become the abode of the nomads and beggars. Due to smart city works, the bus shelters were removed and reconstructed with footpaths. The nomads, who had left during that period, have returned. At the same time, the bus shelter near Lady Goschen Hospital, Ambedkar Circle, Padavu Junction, Mannagudda etc have become the permanent resting place for the nomads.

These people not only sit and sleep at the shelters but also eat food offered by people and throw the leftovers there. They also defecate and urinate in the area. As a result, people waiting for their buses have to wait by the roadside in spite of rain, hot sun etc.

Many of these nomads have come here from far off places by trains. They include mentally unstable people and those discarded by children. The women and child welfare department has made arrangements for the affected people to reside but once admitted, within a couple of days they return here. Officials say that these people are not accustomed to the systematic way of life. Mayor Premandanda Shetty said that an effort to send them back to the above shelters will be made again with the help of the police.

At the time of completion of smart city, I think almost all beggars will become smart in Mangalore. They may contest for MCC elections in future also.

Home less people living on alms and food/money offered by people . Such a miserable state of affair with these helpless people. No other alternative and they make use of little space available to pass the nigh & day. Can government do something to eradicate such practices. ?

So it is not just in Chennai but same everywhere. In Chennai, the Government has spent crores in Pondibazaar - a busy commercial area in heart of chennai. Every morning aged beggars are brought and dropped in this area by a racket and taken back in the night which everyone including the authorities are fully aware. But no steps are taken to check the menace as public suspects that mamool is paid to the departments. This spoils the very purpose of smart city project as the beggars bug you immediately after you enter the area or sit on the seats specially provided for public to relax. Any facility provided for general public is dominated by nuisance creators and the deserving public silently sufferer for obvious reasons.

Same situation is prevailing on the sttetch of smart road from Clock tower to A. BShetty circle. The ealkerd have to negotiate many a destitutes/beggers who are occupieng thid smart footpath. Unless the city Administration takes stern action this will continue. Though traffic police make half hearted efforts unless and untill a permanent solution is found people have to put up with such nuisense. Kudos to Daijiworld for highlighting this burning isue.

Like airports and petrol stations (both places common man cannot afford to go), it is better to install Modiji's big photos in these places so that they will be scared to come close.

we don't have homeless shelters in this country do we ? even if it exists no one bothered. the white doves angels of god have done great job in years by re uniting these homeless, yet politicians of BJP / Congress speak millennial stuff but can't build a proper shelter even if there is one none bothered. and the so called great developers of India BD VHP are busy with other unnecessary stuff. these homeless are often drunk and dangerous.

Because this govt has only one communal agenda in its mind everything else is insignificant. This govt is busy with beef, love-jihad and conversion are main issues for this govt because of its power hungry pangs to influence people but not really bothered about cows straying in the streets eating plastic and promoting cow thefts for media campaign. Hindu women getting raped and murdered by thier own people and staged conversion dramas by thier paid actors.
