Mangaluru: No skill, interest - Toddy tapping in shambles in Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 11: Toddy tapping from palm trees is in its lowest ebb in Karnataka. It happens to be one of the most traditional and original professions of coastal Karnataka.

Now, toddy production has fallen by 95 percent. In the meanwhile, there has been a huge demand for tappers from Kerala who extract toddy from coconut trees.

The profession of extracting toddy from palm trees in the coastal belt has a history dating back by over 500 years. In the past, toddy used to be produced in every village of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Most of the production happens between November and May, and during the season, the twin districts used to collect over a lac litres of toddy per day. Toddy Tappers Federation vice president, Shivappa Suvarna Pakkalapade admits that now not even 5,000 litres of toddy are being manufactured.

There has been increased demand for the toddy from palm trees in the coastal belt. The youngsters of today are more swayed by the palm toddy. The weeknd demand has multiplied by four to five times but the production is woefully short. Good quality toddy is sold for Rs 100 per litre but this is not available most of the time, the toddy sellers admit.

As there has been a severe shortfall in palm toddy there is more demand for coconut toddy. The tappers from Kerala are deemed to be more skilled in extracting toddy from coconut trees and hence there is high demand for them. They get money on the basis of commission on the basis of litres of toddy tapped. Shivappa says that in coastal Karnataka, the people are not showing interest to learn this art, and the Kerala tappers too are not enthusiastic to teach their skills.

Toddy tapping is an adventurous profession that needs hard work. People involved in it have to climb palm trees thrice a day. Even though it is an adventurous job, if the tappers fall from the trees and die, the government does not provide any grants to their families. Therefore, other members of the families of the toddy tappers do not show interest in doing this job. The state government spent crores of rupees at Thumbe, Dakshina Kannada district, where it started a Neera unit but due to the official apathy, it is gathering dust now.

There are no training schools to learn the art of tapping. It has to be taught on one to one basis. The seniors who were tapping toddy have stopped the work and the new generation is not showing interest. As there is no system of training, this profession will soon slip into oblivion. Unless the government opens training centres to teach this job and encourages it, in a few years, this profession, one of the most ancient ones in coastal Karnataka, will vanish, people opine.

Toddy industry can flourish if it is semi-organized. In Kerala at least they have well kept Toddy shops which also offer very good and cheap food. People go there just for the great food and some shops do not even have Toddy just food but they are called Toddy Shop because of the populartiy. In DK there are no proper Toddy shops that are clean and not smelly. They are all dingy joints which normal people avoid. We need to change that and the supply will take care of itself.

Toddy Tapping is a skill that can be mastered. Basic thing is the interest and Value one needs to see in it. There are too many Videos on Toddy Tapping on the net. If one does not understand the language one can see the video/pictures and learn. we have government doing lip service to skills and upskilling... that only leads to kill as Veer says. It is an industry a sizable rural population can involve in farming and toddy tapping. Rs.100 per Litre is a very good money a household can easily earn at the least 1,000 Rs. daily with 10 coconut palms. 4-5 farmers in every village can tap toddy and meet the demand of the nearby towns with few surrounding villages. The upskilling and reskilling programs of the governments MUST be enacted with panchayat president, secretary arranging training programs practically or showing videos to people. but our panchayat /district / state politicians are elected to fleece the public and not to serve. The authorities exercise power and intimidate people unlike any developed country where government centres impart skills, knowledge and train and educate help people in return for the taxes and fees they pay on a daily basis in terms of VAT or GST or fines for wrong doings. This money the state collects is not for pocketing and buying MLA or building party fund to care for when out of power to buy MLA / MP again to come to power. As long as the people forgetting what party /religion/region and demand basic responsibilities from the elected government as wanting to live a dignified life of a respected citizen and holding the Authorities and appointed / elected officials accountable to justify the salary and perks paid by us the citizen there can ne no development. if one needs to upgrade from Toddy to chilled beer and then graduate to Bars it is individuals choice. we speak of Toddy tapping as a cottage industry and State->district->village panchayat has a very basic responsibility to help and initiate uplift the trade.

Toddy is good to drink but hard to harvest. Many reasons why people dont practice it.First of all all children are going to school ,as they become big choose a job which they can look after a family .Toddy harvest isnt much brings money first of all have to learn from small age, second can only in summer .In monsoon cant climb the palm tree.Mostly it is dangerous job.High trees to climb three times and come up and down is not a joke. There arent many trees too to tapping the Toddy. Many people want trees to yield coconuts than only toddy. How many times people have to face poisonous snakes too which come to the smell of toddy .It is not a job for people who doesnt have any side business.

Agree/ Well said. We used to lease one of our coconut trees to a tapper who would come early morning to tap and we watched how dangerous the skill is though I haven't seen or heard anyone falling from the tree. We used to get a small fresh drink every time, which was delicious. Too bad this skill may be lost to coastal Konkan as a whole where we used to have thousands of coconut palm all over the coast. Toddy tappers association should ensure that tappers get life insurance rather than depend on government for compensation.
