Byndoor, Nov 15: Perhaps for the first time in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, the first traditional Kambala of the new season, titled 'Ekalavya Kambalotsava' was organised successfully at Koderi in the taluk. The event was held at the Kambala field of Koderi Patel House, Koderi in Kirimanjeshwar village in association with the taluk level Kambala Samiti. The Kambala, organised in a simple way by sticking to traditions on Saturday November 13, attracted a lot of attention.

'Kambalotsava', a religious and folklore event, was held with government permission. 40 pairs of buffaloes from different places right from Uttara Kannada district to Brahmavar in Udupi district took part in the Kambala. The buffaloes were received with traditional honour and welcome. Censor had been installed to measure the speed of the buffaloes. This happened to be the first experiment in this region, and it was successful.

Kambala competitions were held in the Hagga sub-junior section, Hagga junior, Hagga senior and plank sections. First, second and third prizes were presented. Byndoor regional Kambala Samiti president Venkat Poojary, vice president Dinesh Devadiga, Chaitra Parameshwar Poojary, secretary Venkataramana Ganiga, Suresh Melmane, Kambadakone Farmers Service Cooperative Society general manager and staff, gram panchayat members Subbanna Shetty, Anand Poojary, Krishna Kharvi, veteran Kambala jockey Sanjeev Maravanthe, Appedi Mahalinga Poojary, retired Karnataka Bank official Mahabala Koderi and office bearers of Ekalavya Geleyara Balaga were present.

Kambalotsava a great funfair and an event to enjoy. Most of them look high with spirits but poor Buffaloes are taking all heat and obey their masters wish ! When I was in my teens I used to enjoy the ride with my cousin in the fields after finishing the ploughing task.
