Puttur: Government school with a beautiful, cool classroom

Puttur, Nov 18: For the students in particular, attending classes during hot summer months proves to be a horrible punishment. Almost all the school buildings, both government and private, are built of concrete. During the summer months, the heat inside becomes unbearable. But there is a school in this taluk where the children are not bothered by the temperature outside. Because, the school has a theatre with thick, green cover and the school has provided to the children the facility of being under this cool cover for a couple of hours every day.

This facility has been made available in the government public school in Keyyur in the taluk. This government school has a large number of students and the school badly needed additional space to accommodate them. This school, with the help of local farmers, created a classroom by using coconut and areca nut fronds. This classroom remains cool even amid summer heat, and thereby the students love to be under this roof. The school gives more importance to classrooms supported by nature.

In the theatre meant for the entertainment activities of the children, a classroom has been created for the benefit of the children. This theatre is different from others because the roof of the theatre has been covered by the thick growth of green creepers. Because of this cover, even in peak summer, the classroom here remains cool and comfortable. Because of this, children from different classes are provided with an opportunity to attend classes under this cool cover one or two hours every day.

This system has been continued with the intention that the summer heat does not harm the children. It is ensured that the creepers here do not adversely affect the children in any way. This is maintained every year.

The staff of the school planted different creepers four years back with the purpose of providing a thick, green roof for the theatre. Veins like fashion flora, den bergia grandiflora and passion fruit have been planted. These veins have grown well and covered the entire room. They have also become home for different birds. Drip irrigation has been arranged to feed water, and the children take care of the vegetation and water needs. The people too have been helping the school. After the roof with veins was created, the school has been able to save about Rs 2,000 which otherwise they would have to spend towards rental of shamiyana during the talent and other events.
