Mangaluru: All Christian denominations submit memorandum against proposed anti-conversion bill

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (ANK/DV)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Nov 19: A delegation of All Christian denominations visited the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office on Friday November 19 and submitted a memorandum against the proposed anti-conversion bill.

The memorandum said that the Christian community opposes the proposed anti-conversion bill. “What is need to introduce the law? It is wrong to blame the entire Christian community due to one or two incidents.

“The concerned department has issued an order to survey Christian missionaries and churches. What was the need of the survey? The church details are already with the government. Why do they have to conduct survey again? Those who allege about conversion can look into the details to know the reality.

“If conversion is true, then the Christian community would have been in majority by now. Today, our population is just 1.8%.

“The Christian community is involved in several social service works like running educational institutions and hospitals. Let them prove that the Christian community is involved in conversion. We are deeply hurt by the allegations made against the Christian community over conversion. We demand to withdraw the anti-conversion bill,” said the memorandum.

Fr J B Saldanha, PRO & Spiritual Director, Catholic Sabha, diocese of Mangalore said, “The entire Christian Community in Mangalore opposes the proposal of Anti-Conversion Bill in one voice and questions the need for such an exercise when sufficient laws and court directives are in place to monitor any aberration of the existing laws.”

Former MLA J R Lobo emphasising the constitutional right said, “The Indian Constitution Article 25 guarantees freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion subject to public order, morality and health. Further, Article 26 gives, “Freedom to manage religious affairs”. And, therefore, introducing such laws would infringe the rights of the citizens, especially of the minority communities.”

Stany Lobo, president, Catholic Sabha said, “The false allegation of conversions on Christian communities have disturbed the peace and unity among all Christians in Karnataka. The Government must never try to bring enmity between Christian denominations by generalising few incidents and branding our actions as conversions.”

Bishop Demetrius, Believers Church and Rev Winfred Ammanna, CSI said that Christians are known for peace, unity and social service. Thousands of schools, colleges and hospitals are run and managed by Christian Community across the State. When lakhs of students are graduating from these institutions year after year and thousands of patients irrespective of caste, creed and colour receive the best medical attention from our hospitals and care centers, but not one of them has ever been influenced, compelled or coerced to change his or her religion, they said.

Rev Prabhuraj, area chairman, CSI KSD, Rev Sandeep Theofil, MCC, Fr Jose, Orthodox Syrian, Fr Mani, Beltangady diocese, Lovely Yeldos, Puttur diocese, Pastor Donald Menezes & Pastor Ivan Monteiro, New Life, Rev Mathew, Marthoma, Fr Onil D'Souza, director, St Anthony Ashram, Sr Mariette, provincial, Bethany Sisters, Alfred Manohar, CSI, secretary, Karnataka United Christian Forum For Human Rights, Jaison Crasta, president ICYM Catholic diocese, Mangalore, Fr Ashwin Cardoza, director, ICYM Mangalore diocese, Fr J B Crasta, secretary, Laity Commission, Mangalore Catholic diocese, John D'Silva, secretary, diocesan Pastoral Parishad Mangalore, Fr Anil Ivan Fernandes, director, CCC, Mangalore diocese, and Roy Castelino, PRO, Mangalore Catholic diocese were part of the delegation.

Additional deputy commissioner Manikya accepted the memorandum in the DC’s absence.

Udupi

A delegation of Christian leaders visited the deputy commissioner to submit a memorandum against the proposed anti-conversion bill and census of Christian churches and institutions.

The delegation met deputy commisioner Kurma Rao and tahsildar of Kaup, Karkala and assistant commissioner of Kundapur and submitted the memorandum.

The delegates opposed the anti-conversion bill and stated, “Based on the statements of the leaders of ruling party the media is publishing that anti-conversion bill is being enforced in the state. If at all this is true we the Christian community oppose this decision. Article 25 of Indian Constitution gives freedom of religion to all persons. The anti-conversion bill is a repression of constitutional rights. Christian community of Karnataka will never allow this to happen.

“In a meeting of the backward class welfare department it has been decided to undertake a census of the churches and its allied institutions in the state. The police intelligence department has given the responsibility to undertake this task. Article 15 of the Indian Constitution prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. Thus being in the constitution how the government can undertake a census just targeting the Christian community. Prior to this a caste based census has also been taken place in the state. All the documents and details of the churches are available with the government already. Christian community in the state has been involved in the educational and healthcare sector. Selfless service is being rendered by the community. This will continue to the ages. If the anti-conversion law is enforced it will be a tool for the established interest groups.

“Considering our request government should withdraw from implementing anti-conversion law and census of the churches and institutions should also not to be undertaken,” the memorandum stated.

Representatives from Udupi Catholic diocese, CSI, Syrian, United Basel Mission, Full Gospel Church, Syro Malabar church, Syro Malankar church, Catholic Sabha, Karnataka Christian Okkuta and others were present.

If at all there are a few conversions these are transparent. Our churches and prayer houses are open to all. We don’t operate any underground sleeper cells to carryout conversions. Since the government is adamant on anti-conversion law let them pass the bill and let’s see what they can unearth. Now it is the duty of the opposition to focus on the contents of the law and ensure that it’s fair and just, without any loopholes, civil registration of inter-religious marriages should be mandatory to ascertain that bride or bridegroom’s conversion was not under compulsion, misuse or abuse of law should be made punishable.

Steve, why we made that habit of giving donations? For what purpose ? Even our people are going to Dharmasthaka (their holy place) and some other religious places too for donations and help. Their dharmadhikari/poojari contributed willingly. Even, our associations approach their business concerns for sponsorship/for souveniers (college, school, churches etc) and they contribute willingly without any hatred. Remember, they are majority and have running businesses. When there's unity everything will be easy and solved out. When there's hatred, my dear all sort of negativity enters our mind.

Understanding ‘Free will’. Why didn’t God forewarn Adam and Eve that Satan was going to tempt then? The answer is simple. God has given us free will and it is up to us exercise it. If are do not know the answers, we should seek God’s guidance. Unfortunately, neither Adam nor Eve chose to exercise it. We need to understand that God is just even to his enemies. If He were cast Satan into a Lake of fire and sulphur He would be forced to do the same to Adam and Eve as they had disobeyed too. It is in this context we need to understand Jn 3:16 which is as follows “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” We are entitled to use our free will as we like it even if it is against our own interest. However those who do so need to understand if we do not obey God’s commandment we will gradually lose graces (DEUT CH 28). It is our duty to seek guidance from God (Mathew 7:7-8). Nothing comes without asking. If at all we doing well, it is because God answers the prayers of our parents and forefathers. But God will not interfere with our free will. Take for example, if a son of a judge chooses to study software even though he will not be a success at it, but wants to enjoy higher salary and prospects of going abroad, can it be considered as an inducement by the software industry and face criminal charges? Come to think of it, every industry offers inducement to some other industry. Does that mean we enact laws to equalize salary across all the industries? It is well known that any country which allows immigrants in its country will be increasing minority population . Some of the attributes of God a) God has a conscience. God could have easily put Satan in the lake of fire of sulphur when Satan tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God. But he could not have lived with it as Adam and Eve too had disobeyed Him, as GOD IS JUST EVEN TO HIS ENEMIES. b)The Commandments which God has given us applies to Him too. Except for the command “Thou shall not kill. This is so because if we kill anybody we can not give life back but If God kills He is bound to give him on the Judgments day. c) God is slow to anger. He always hopes that the wicked will turn back to Him. This is the reason why crimes thrive but not for long. Therefore, we need to seek protection from Jesus as truth and the graces are given through Him. d) Lord our God does not tolerates anyone doing wicked things in His name (Mat 7:21-23,Deut 5:11)

Are subdivides into many classes. In Mangalore the following subdivision are found, Sirudegar ( the highest class). Aldengar. ( Second). Cutdnangar. ( Third ). Divodegar. Natnolegar. Sasragar. Puruvargar. Maidegar. These names are said to have been taken from the villagers of Goa to which these people belonged. So why are you protesting the fact.

If the churches have open registers about their missionary arms and organizations, there is no need for any other law. The Government can easily verify them and if they find a truant outfit which indulges in conversions, then it should raid them on receiving information and take the organizers into custody with due process and rights.

Mohan I believe Canadian govt also start doing the raiding process then many has to go back to where they came from. Religious intolerance is destructive and bad for any nation. I am sure we all enjoy freedom of faith in Canada and same applies to india as well. Priest are highly educated and they have to justify to whom. Religion is own choice and govt should not be interfering in people lifes.

Need of the bill is very much there and the evidence is also there for all to see. I personally know of cases wherein a marriage was allowed only after the groom agreed for conversion. This is not just confined to my generation but also the information I heard from earlier generations as well. Most importantly, why be against anti-conversion when this delegation feels that they never indulged in it and never will in future. After this bill comes into law, examples cited above will become court's business as well and that is the reason behind this memorandum. If North-east India is any example, this bill should have been in place long time ago.

Glen, to be frank here, (if people like it or not) hindus have persecuted Christians here. In fact, from whom we got converted, they have persecuted our ancestors and without any option, our ancestors got converted. Basically, hindus were innocent, humane, peace loving harmonious people as i have experienced. When soneone comes and tries to attack me, its my duty to protect my house and my people instead of keeping quiet. Thats what they are doing now....When we know, we are not converting, whats the need to submit? Be open be free...
