Kundapur, Feb 2: The Hijab controversy in Udupi during the last few days has been making news on a national level. With the issue knocking the doors of the state High Court, it has blown up into a battle between the Hijab and saffron shawl in Kundapur Junior College. The government pre university college here is known for excellent education for the past several years. Some students here, opposing another group wearing Hijab, had started attending classes wearing saffron scarfs. About 28 female students had been attending college wearing Hijabs. Countering this, more than 100 Hindu girls entered the campus wearing saffron shawls today. Fearing that the matter might go out of hand, MLA Srinivas Shetty had personally visited the college to dilute the situation.
Shetty held a meeting about Hijab with parents of students concerned for about one and a half hours. The parents maintained that wearing Hijab is their custom and the meeting failed.
The MLA has reportedly told that students wearing clothing other than college uniform cannot be permitted inside the campus. With the police department also informed about the issue, the college administration has asked the students of both the communities should adhere to uniform clothing.
