Kundapur: Muslim girl students protest outside Bhandarkar's College

Kundapur, Feb 4 (IANS): The Muslim students of the Bhandarkar's College here staged a protest on Friday, February 4 in front of the college entrance gate after being denied entry into the campus for wearing hijab.

Police have beefed up the security as hundreds of students came in support of the protesting girl students who are demanding to allow them attend classes while wearing the 'hijab'.

A large group of girl students sat in front of the entrance gate of the college on the road blocking the way and raised slogans against the college management. The girl students voiced the slogan 'hijab is our right' and 'we want justice' and slammed the principal of the college for denying entry to them for wearing hijab.

The protesting girls alleged that they were pushed out of the campus and the college main gate was closed on them. They charged that they were treated like 'dogs and criminals'. They claimed that they 'are mentally hurt' for making them stand on the road. They had to use the washroom of a nearby hospital, the girls said.

The parents of the girls, who also came to the protest site, questioned the college authorities on sending their children out of the college and making them stand on the road for wearing hijab. The college authorities and the police officers maintained that they have to carry out the orders of the government and they cannot take back the decision.

The parents argued that if the rule about the hijab was told to them at the time of admissions, they would have got their children admitted to another college. The college authorities maintained that if they are let in with hijab, other students will flaunt saffron shawls and they can't afford to see the situation go out of hand.

The protesting students said that their seniors, older sisters who studied in the college, wore hijab without any problem. "This morning at 9.15 a.m., while entering, the principal, police, and lecturers denied us entry. They did not answer our questions. They maintained that they have high-level orders."

They said that on February 1, all Muslim girls studying in 1 and 2 PUC were called to the library. "The Principal and other lecturers asked them to come to college without wearing hijab. The students said that if anyone had objections they should bring their parents. When they came with parents, local MLA Haladi Srinivas Shetty and others were present and no proper answers were given and the next day notice was given by the college authorities that hijab is not allowed in the college," said the girls.

If any attire hides your identity , then its a security concern. Other than that I don't see any issue with the attires as long as its inline with the school guidelines. If they cannot do that, they always have the freedom to enroll in other schools where there is no dress code/uniform.

I don’t find anything wrong by just covering the head... Sikh community is the backbone of Indian defense... How they will feel if they are told to remove their turban in Army... This is only political motivated... When BJP Harsimrat Kaur Badal can cover her head and attend Parliament sessions...Why not Muslim girls....

Apart from politics, hijab , burqa, kersari shawl, skull cap etc etc are distraction for teaching faculty. If there is one or two hijab then no issues. If its numbers increases definitely distraction.. coming to sikh issue they have separate regiment called sikh regiment. They are not mixed with other regiment soldiers as far as I know

Nowadays uniform lost its purpose. When it was introduced first, it mainly meant equality and simplicity. Now the uniform means identity and dignity.

Tolerant would be better word instead of liberal. They know that growth is only possible if they let all communities live in peacefully. Not oppose blindly for other peoples values. Your sentence make perfect sense, we need to be more tolerant & let others live as per their belief (Within the boundaries of law)

I think different colleges had different different rules. I think government can wash off its hands just by asking institutions to follow pre-existing rules. Schools/college management authorized to frame rules

Here the first main mistake is from the college side. If in case they had made a strict uniform code and mentioned it in admission forms, then the students & parents could have decided whether they want education here or somewhere else. Point to point mention from accessories to headscarf to Burqa to Hijab, to shawl. If the students have consented and signed such a form if there was any, then the college has all the right to enforce the rules. They should not wake up like this in middle of the term with all this drama. Best solution, let this academic year pass. By then rewrite your prospectus and admission rules for the new batch and new academic year for all the students. Make all sign it. Those who do not want to study can change their school during term end.

Dear students of Bhandarkars College, Please don't play in the hands of BJP at the time of election. It looks like a small number taking the institute on ransom. The damage is already done . No party now will stand up with you. So immediately just wear what you wore last year to college and dont change. Good luck in your exams.
