Kaup, Feb 8: In a hit and run case reported near here, a pedestrian was killed by an unidentified vehicle. The pedestrian was killed after having been hit by a vehicle near H S M Steel Centre at Moodabettu on national highway 66. The accident happened during the late night hours of Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Raju Poojary (64), resident of Pangala Aryadi. He had earlier worked as an employee of a hotel based in Mumbai. Currently he was engaged in fishing activity in Bhatkal. He had come here to take part in the post funeral rituals related to the demise of his aunt. He was walking towards his house at Aryadi when the accident happened.
Raju was accompanied by a few members of his family when going to Aryadi. On reaching near the above steel centre, he had asked his relatives to go ahead as he wanted to relieve himself. Even though the accident happened just 200 metres away after the spot where his relatives were, the relatives did not come to know of it as the accident happened behind their backs. After reaching home they had called Raju on his phone many a time but he had not responded. After sometime, the Kaup police who received the call, informed them about the accident.
People living near the highway along with the police, had admitted Raju Poojary after the accident into the district hospital at Udupi. The doctors who checked him said he had already died. The eyewitnesses said that the vehicle moved ahead without stopping, after the accident, towards Udupi. A piece of the broken number plate was recovered from the accident spot.
Kaup police circle inspector, Prakash, said that various CCTV cameras are being checked. He exuded the confidence of being able to identify the killer vehicle and nab the driver who caused the accident early.
On the basis of a complaint made by Lata Bangera, daughter-in-law of the deceased, Kaup police registered a case and began investigation. Raju has left behind wife and a son.
