Udupi: Hijab controversy - MLA receives threat calls, informs home minister

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 12: With reference to the Hijab controversy which started in the city and snowballed into a major controversy, local MLA Raghupati Bhat, said that he has been getting frequent calls from foreign countries and through internet calls, which are in the form of threat to his life. He said that callers have been warning him that they will target him, and asking him not to assert himself in the presence of Muslims.

It is said that many callers told him that they know how to tame him. Several of the calls were also received from local numbers, Bhat, who informed the state home minister about the development, stated.

The MLA said that he has faced such threats many times in the past. He said that not a single Muslim from Udupi district has opposed his stand and that the Muslims of Udupi and Bengaluru are backing him on this issue. "Right from my childhood, I have come across such threats. Qazis of Muslim Union Udupi have extended support to me. They have said that my stand is justified. I have God on my side and he will look after my safety. Udupi district superintendent of police, Vishnuvardhan, called me. People of my constituency are my security guards. No individual or organization from here has posed threats to me. A mentally unsound man called me from Hyderabad. I answered all his doubts and allegations for 20 minutes. In fact, Muslims have no problems with this issue but some people have misguided six girls," he stated.

He said that he has been getting threats through internet calls, phone, WhatsApp, Facebook etc. He added that other than uniforms, he has not discussed any other issues during these calls.

Belief that whatever you do will come back to you, either in this life or the next. It is embraced by followers of Buddhism, Hinduism and others around the world. For some, this is not only deeds, but thoughts and words as well. This is called Karma.

Nothing new...as usual drama and dombarata to divert attention from the real issues affecting the people of Udupi. They have nothing to talk about development, infrastructure, healthcare, drinking water, sanitation, education, unemployment but have plenty to talk about hijabs and colour of cheddies that people should wear.

let the cops check the phone numbers - most would be staged or just drama by the MLA. the gent is trying to make himself a hero. The hime minister is also made of the same stuff, as we have seen over the past few months.

The thumb rule when you receive threat calls is to inform Police and NIA which you were talking about yesterday. File and FIR, You should have recorded the phone call. Even my kid knows to record phone calls. Is there something you are trying to hide? Skeletons of 2008 incident? Kuch kuch yaad aa raha hai...

These threat calls may be genuine or may be a publicity stunt by the MLA, wherein his own men could have made the calls. After all, playing the victim card is the easiest way to gain political mileage! Incidentally, why has he not lodged a complaint with the Police? With modern technology, it is not difficult to trace the callers - at least most of them!

MLA Raghupathi Bhat should focus more on controlling covid pandemic by imposing restrictions, giving boosters to everyone and putting police in public places to monitor whether people are following covid protocols and also expanding the Hospital or health care infrastructure to provide proper treatment to covid patients in Udupi District..
