Mangaluru, Feb 16: Six transgenders have been arrested in connection to the attempted assault on social worker Asif Apatbandhava who has been on a protest near the tollgate at Suratkal for the last many days. A few transgenders had allegedly tried to attack him past midnight on Tuesday February 15.
Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday February 16, police commissioner N Shashi Kumar informed that six transgenders had been arrested for the assault. They have been identified as Vasavi Gowda (32), a native of Mandya, Lipika (19), a native of Davangere, Hima (24) from Hassan, Adya (22) from Mysuru, Maya (28) from Mysuru, and Maithri (28) from Ramnagar. All are residents of Pandavapura taluk.
The police commissioner added that they had been produced in court and they have been booked under sections 143,147, 504, 506, 294 and 149 of the IPC.
"The transgenders said that when they were begging near the toll gate, protestors misbehaved with them, clicking photographs, filming videos, teasing and offering money for sexual favours," the police commissioner said. A counter complaint has been lodged in this regard.
"The protestors at the toll gate did not seek permission for the protest. We will take appropriate action in this regard," the commissioner said.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Asif Apatbandhava, a social worker, has been holding protest in unique form near the tollgate at Suratkal for the last some days, demanding the removal of the tollgate which he claims is illegal. A few transgenders reportedly tried to attack him past midnight on Tuesday February 15.
Initially, at about 12.30 am, two transgenders came to him. A little while later, a gang of transgenders came there. It is said that they used abusive words against the protesters and tried to attack them. Asif Apatbandhava immediately began to capture the proceedings on Facebook Live. Some of the members of the team began to dance and behaved indecently, it has been claimed. Immediately the police came there and eased the situation.
It is said that the gang members threatened Asif to demolish the dais created for holding the protest within a day, and to drive him away from there. They also threatened to see that he is lodged in Suratkal police station the next day, it is said.
