Photo Journalists Summoned Over Snapping President on Goa Beach

Panaji, Jan 6 (IANS) Three photo journalists were Wednesday summoned by the police for taking photographs of President Pratibha Patil on a Goa beach. A photo journalists association here, however, called the move an attack on media freedom.

In the photographs, taken Tuesday afternoon, Patil is seen wearing a colourful sari and sitting on a beach bed at Benaulim beach, 40 km from here, as a white couple wearing swimwear passes by. These photos were published in local newspapers Wednesday.

Around Wednesday noon, three photo journalists - Ganadeep Sheldekar working for local English daily The Navhind Times, Soiru Komarpant who works for another local English daily Gomantak Times and Arvind Tengse, a freelance photojournalist - were summoned by the Margao police. The police recorded their statement on how and why they clicked photographs of the president's beach trip.

Patil is on a four-day private visit to Goa since Monday.

"The president's security officer had told us that this was a private visit and that no photographers would be allowed to take pictures. Accordingly we had asked them to stay away from the president and her entourage," said Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh Gaonkar.

He said that the photo journalists were allowed to leave after their statement was recorded. "We wanted to know how far they were from the president," Gaonkar said.

Rajtilak Naik, president of the Photo Journalists Association Goa (PJAG), told IANS: "This is an attack on media freedom. We photo journalists are just doing our jobs. A beach is a public place, we have every right to take photos."

"We took the photograph with a 400 mm zoom lens. We did not transgress any security barriers. This is harassment of journalists on duty. The president is a public person, why should there be a problem," he added.

Sources at the Raj Bhavan, where President Patil is put up, however said that the presidential entourage was embarrassed by the sight of the sari-clad president sunning herself, along with the white couple, where the male tourist was bare-chested and his woman partner was wearing a bikini swim suit.

"The photographers were not allowed and the photos are not in good taste. According to members of the entourage, the president did not like the way the photos appeared," a Raj Bhavan official said.

If honourable President is embarrassed by the photographs why did she go to the beach at first place. All the other visitors including bikini clad woman should have been vacated and beach should have been sanitised only for the President. The objection proves the typical mentality of Indians after breaking the law/decorum and asking Do You Know Who I Am? Come on President You are part of the system and Not above the system.

If the President is not happy with
    taking her pictures in that
    particular location, it must be
respected. If there is no sign
    preventing photography, then the
    photographers are not liable for
    infringement.

It is a joke to talk about "Invasion of Privacy" in India!
Mediamen can sneak into any place whether it is a hospital trauma center/mortuary or private resort...If objected, they will always raise a hue and cry saying "freedom of the press" has been violated!
Every newspaper is full of photos of the injured, dead...with no regard for dignity/ privacy.

A public figure trying to have private life and that too in India with a billion population. What was she thinking? If she is so concerned about having to give photo-op with young nude watchable(s) she should not have been there in the first place. Our public figures want all the profit of public life and none of the burden that comes with it. President Patil, is this your age to go there. Just look at that embarrassing picture. If our dear President cares so much for her privacy she should have also thrown those nude firangis out. Apparently their presence is alright, it's only the Indians that disturb her privacy. Aren't you supposed to be with Mr. Shekawat by the way. What a shame Mrs. President?

The Big question is how photo journalists sneaked in to the spot!?
Certainly an emabarrassment for the President of India sharing photo with bikini clad. This is utter an security laps on the part of Security department of Presidetial entourage and instead of summoning photograpers better to quiz security officials.

Since it was a private visit, that too on a beach, the president should have been in appropriate beachswim wear. Saree is a formal dress and not at all a beach wear. That would have been embarrasing for other beach goers.

Journalist are NOT having right to take photos without persons permission. They can take Photos when there is illegal activities or for media purpose. President was in private visit and she was told not to take her photos. You journalist must repect the president's word and follow the instructions. The law is supreme not the journalist.
