Mangalore, Jan 10: The eagerly awaited “Sangeet Sardar” Wilson Olivera’s 30th musical nite was held at St Agnes Special School grounds here on Sunday January 9 amidst much fanfare.

The event evoked enthusiastic response from Konkani music lovers who assembled in large numbers to relish the musical evening. Wilson, who has 5 music albums to his credit including the recently released 5th album “Tuvem Gaytana” entertained the crowd along with his music group with a variety of melodious numbers ranging from romantic duets to sentimental songs including a tribute song to his mentor Konkann Kogull the late Wilfy Rebimbus. There was another song in the form of a tribute to the victims of the Mangalore Air Crash of last year. The musical nite was organized by Alfred Benis.

All the songs sang at the nite were written by Konkani Manik Wilson Olivera who also sang many songs with his team of singers consisting of Prakash D'Souza, Prakash Madevan, Zeena Pereira, Babitha Pinto, Joseph Mathias and Pradeep Pinto doing justice to the songs penned by him.

Olivera and his team of singers gave a musical feast of 15 Konkani numbers by him, some of which are already popular among the Konkani speaking people. Konkani Sardar Olivera’s compositions on diverse themes gave an ample indication of his talent and hold over language apart from his beautiful and melodious renditions. With over 800 compositions to his credit over the years, Wilson Olivera has carved out a niche in the Konkani music field as a meaningful composer.

‘Memory’ team provided the comedy element at the show and Mandd Sobhann’s dance group grooved to some of the numbers sung at the nite. Entertainment part also included bodybuilding show by former Mr World Raymond D'Souza who flexed his body muscles to the tunes of the hit Alisha Chinai number ‘Made in India’.

The musical evening began with Wilson and group singing “Dhavon Aylan” soon followed by “Chandnem Udelam” sung by Prakash D'Souza. Prakash Mahadevan then teamed up with another bubbling singer Zeena Pereira to present the number “Kirak Peracho”. Wilson, whose melodious voice is often compared to the late Wilfy Rebimbus, paid a rich tribute to his mentor and Konkani legend through the song “Tuven Gaytana”, specially composed for the late Wilfy and sung by Wilson Olivera.

Wilson Olivera also payed a special tribute to the victims of Air India crash of Mangalore, along with the pictures of the terrible tragedy on the screen, which welled the eyes of the assembled people.

Joseph Mathias showcased his singing talent by singing “Bombaichem Chedum”, a fast number just like the fast-phased life of people in Mumbai city. Pradeep Pinto filled life to Olivera’s lyrics by singing ‘Moja Jivanth” and Babita Pinto gave a tell-tale rendering of the lives of women whose husbands work in the Gulf for eking out a living.

Another heart-rending sentimental number “mamma” was sung by Pradeep Pinto. Prakash D'Souza teamed up with Babita to sing a duet number “Sorgacha Bukacher” and Babith Pereira sang a hilarious number “Novro Sodge’, that sent a chuckle on the faces of the enthusiastic crowd. “London nahi”, another fast number was a taunt for girls who flaunt they bodies and go half dressed in the name of fashion. Finally Prakash Mahadevan sang “Galanncher Thambsan Kashi”, before Wilson and his team once again came to the stage with the final song of the day “dev borem karun”.

Musical nite was preceded by a stage programme with Fr Andres Leo D'Souza, Parish priest of St Joseph’s Church, Jeppu, presiding over the show. Fr John Vas, Parish Priest of St Ann’s Church, Kelrai, was the chief guest. Joseph Mathias, Audy Rego, Ozzy D'Souza and Walter Nandalike were the guests of honour.

In the same venue Walter Nandalike, editor-in-chief of daijiworld.com inaugurated the website “Seekers H R Consultants”, of Felix Moral, Anjelore.

The organizers of the Olivera Nite felicitated former Mr World Raymond D'Souza on the occasion. Circle Inspector of Paranmbur Velantine D'Souza honoured him by presenting a shawl. Walter Nandalike presented a memento to Raymond D'Souza and Ozzy D'Souza presented him with a bouquet.

The musical nite was conducted and directed by sangeet guru Joel Pereira. He was ably supported by musicians like Damodar Kumble on tabla, base guitar Ashit Pinto, drummer Sachin Sequeira, Theo Alvares on trumpet and lead guitar by Roshan D'Souza, Anjelore.

The musical show was compered by Ronald Olivera, younger brother of Wilson Olivera. The stage programme was compered by Vincent Mendonca.

Reymond D'Cunha Thakode welcomed the gathering and also proposed the vote of thanks.

It was a memorable evening for all those who had come to take part in the musical nite and Olivera and his dedicated team of singers gave the Konkani music aficionados an evening to cherish.

“Tuvem Gaitana” , “Air India Express Crash”, “Mamma”, “Tuja Galancher”, “Yo Re tum Yo Re moga”, “Chandne Udelam”, “Mai”, “Punvecho Chandrem laztha”, are few class songs composed by Wilson Olivera. When I listen to these songs I always wonder from where he gets such rich lyrics. God has really gifted Wilson Olivera with great composing talent, which only few have amongst us. There may be many composers in Konkani, but only few deliver good quality lyrics these days and rest bring out the album only to popularise their name, but the popularity becomes only when there is quality in it. His recent album is really superb. Since 2 months I am listening to this album only, worth listening it. We are blessed to have a great talented person in Konkani like Wilson Olivera. I feel Wilson is the Super Star amongst young talents. Wilson Olivera please come up with few more albums like same, we are waiting for it. Keep it up Wilson!!!

My general opinion on music. Every language has its own richness and style of music. Some can say monotonous but we cannot copy other music coz dat style has made hit in that particular language. If Sooraj is saying dat new artists are bringing out music with different styles and he likes them, then he can do so. But he cannot say that all konkani music lovers have to support that music. If those songs have had good music and lyrics then ppl have had surely supported them.If he feels or the composer of that song feels that it's excellent then it doesn't mean that everyone should have the same opinion.

From the past reviews of audio release and music nite we understand that many like Wilson Olivera's music. He should maintain his quality as he has done so far and present more beautiful numbers.

Mr. Kiran Mangalore, The meaning of the word “Sardar” is leader or King. It’s not warriors. Wilson Olivera defiantly deserves the title “Sangeeth Sardar”, because he has composed and tuned number of songs in Konkani by his own. Everyone who have contributed high quality songs in Konkani have bestowed with good titles such as “Konkan Kogul- Wilfy Rebimbus”, “Sangeeth Samrat- Henry D’Souza”, “Yodelling King- Melvin Peris”, “Konkan Kalashri- Claud D’Souza”, etc. All these great personalities deserve these titles.

It was a body show from our own Konkani person Mr. World Reymond D’Souza. Instead of negative remarks, we should be proud to have such a great personality amongst us.

Mr. James D’Souza I totally agree with your statement. Anyone who reads Mr. Sooraj’s comment may not see any logic in it. Even I too didn’t get what exactly he wants to convey? Mr. Sooraj, Daijiworld is a media were they post all the comments (Negative / Positive) for every article / news. The artist gets the encouragement as per his quality. Because Wilson Olivera’s quality of composing is good he has got more encouragements from the public and he deserves it. Why are you so upset about it? You claim that you have listened to all his 5 albums. If you have really listened his all 5 albums properly, then defiantly you wouldn’t have made this kind of comment. I feel you have not listened to it. Most of his songs have become popular today and I can say his 5th volume is a super hit. I purchase all albums in konkani and can say his recent album is the best album in Konkani released in 2010. It’s all in the public’s hands to make a song / album popular. In Konkani a song / album becomes popular when its lyrics are good. By reading your comments I feel you might be one of the composer or producer in Konkani. If my guessing is right then I advice you to give better quality in Konkani music so that you too get a good encouragement from public. Show you ability and get encouragements. ALL THE BEST.

Guy’s please stop senseless debates. Mr. Sooraj, even I too have heard Wilson Olivera’s all 5 albums and attended few shows as well. Could you show me one song or one line in his any song which is a Xerox copy of Wilfy’s song? If you are commenting so strongly, then you should have an evidence as well. May be his voice is similar to Wilfy Rebimbus, this does not mean he is coping Wilfy’s song. By reading your senseless comment I strongly feel you are jealous about the encouragements he gets from his fans or well wishers.
Mr. Kiran, What’s wrong in having a body show or fashion show in a musical nite. Is there any rule or law not to have body show or fashion show or a comedy skit in the Konkani musical nite? If you don’t like this kind of shows, please do not attend… no one is forcing you. Kindly do not spoil an artist name Wilson Olivera has given his best to Konkani music. Well, what’s wrong MC kneeling down to sought the blessing from the priest? This shows the simplicity of the MC and his respect towards the priests. If there are people like you in Konkani community, God have to first save you. Grow up with your thoughts man!
Mr. Wilson Olivera please do not be discouraged by reading such senseless comments. There will be people like these in all the communities. These are the people who are born to kill their own community. We have to ignore such people. Majority of the Konkani music lovers are with you. I wish you all success in your music journey. GOOD LUCK!!!

Nice point by Mr. Kiran what has body show got to do in a music nite??? I also want to know what has jokes and silly compering got to do in musical nites?? It spoils the mood of music in a music nite. This trend is there only in konkani music nites and this is one of the reason that our music taste gets spoiled and also the standards our music wont grow!! hope young and upcoming musicians are listening. Thank you.

    Nice debate going on.
Earlier MCs used to just demanding / ordering claps , now they are kneeling down too! Good development indeed ! But , Mr. M C only knelt down when he sought the blessings of the priests. He stood up when he sought the blessings of other audience. Partiality here too !

Regarding - BIRUDH - Kogull was okay , something related and connected to singing and music. What is this Sardar ? Sardars are Warriors. Remember , Ratnagiricho Sardar ? What is this Sangeet Sardar all about ? I wonder why there is Body Show in musical nite ? Disgusting ! No wonder , tomorrow if Konkani musical nites feature fashion shows , catwalks and dog shows, No Wonder! God Save KONKANI.

First of all I would like to thank this popular website www.daijiworld.com for giving wide publicity for my brother Wilson Olivera’s 30th Musical Nite which was held on the 9th of January 2010. On behalf of Wilson, we extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Alfred Benis, who single handedly organized a show of such a magnitude.
Regarding Veena’s message, on behalf of those who have hurt your sentiments and the sentiments of your family, I sincerely apologize. I hope and pray that it was not intentional. As I mentioned while compering the 30th Nite, my brother Wilson had always considered the great legend late Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus his ‘GURU’. I would like to put this on record that it was mainly due to the support and encouragement of Wilfy, we could organize Wilson’s first Musical Nite in Padukone, for which ‘Konkan Kogull’ and ‘Konkan Maina’ were the Chief Guests. Ever since, we have been getting continuous support from Rebimbus family and the Konkani music lovers, which keeps us going. Also, if his first musical album was released it was again due to the continuous persistence and insistence of Wilfy to me and my brothers. To both Wilson and I, the great Wilfy Rebimbus is unmatchable and inimitable. His contribution to Konkani music is second to none. Wilson has very clearly put this in his Tribute song to Wilfy in the 5th album ‘None has ever born and none will ever be born like a great artist Wilfy’, which should explain what Wilfy meant and still means to Wilson...

    ....continued...

When I was the MC for ‘Wilfy Nite’ in Bahrain (for which Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, HE B. Shetty was the Chief Guest), I had mentioned that ‘’it’s our luck that Wilfy is born to Konkani, and it is his bad luck. If he was an artist in any other language, he would have received much more awards and laurels than what he has already received, which is very little compared to his quality of his songs and contribution to the language’’. I meant every word I said and many will agree with me as well. I sincerely hope that the our community people who are influential will go all out to get more awards to this legend at least now, when his contribution is very fresh in everyone’s mind, though it is highly impossible to be forgotten as long as our mother tongue Konkani exists. Through this page, I would like to reiterate that our entire family is with Rebimbus family during their testing times and would like to recognize the continuous encouragement we have been getting from ‘Konkan Maina’ Meena Rebimbus, Vishwas & fly and Veena & fly, many Konkani artists and several organizations of Konkani in India and abroad.
    Jai Konkani.

For your kind information to all the readers I have not compared Wilfy to Wilson nor said that Wilson tries to copy anybody, but its a fact that Wilsons songs are a xerox copy of the legend I am making this point after listening to all his five albums. All are free to do whatever they want but as a community and music loving people we should always try and encourage who deserves the most there are some much more talented composers who don't get any kind of encouragement which is unfair to them. Just take a example of the konkani usic of today it is monotonous(weather you agree or not) a person who knows music and follows konkani music will certainly agree with me. Only a few musicians here and there are trying to make a difference according to the time who should be supported, or else the music culture in konkani will fade away and just remain as a reproduction, it should grow in a diversified manner like it happens in Hindi,Tamil, English or any other launguage. This is the only way that konkani music can stand at a world level and we have some young and old composers who are capable of it so please support and encourage them. Thank you.

...(contd from previous post) This organization was the first one to be bold enough to stage a first ever Konkani musical Nite which was the First ever “Wilfy Nite”, which later made history. It was not any ordinary organization.

I know that you have written all this very nicely with all respects to dad and his work which is readable, but please put the facts properly. It hurts our sentiments. And especially when we have still not overcome in terms of Dad’s death, it was unbearable which made me to write on this.

Wilson is very talented with good lyrics and tunes and he is trying his best to give his fans the best. There is no doubt that he is one among the best composers we have in Konkani today. He has his own way of singing and composing songs. Our family wishes him every best in his musical journey.

My Dad has worked hard to reach this height today. I’ve seen how he has struggled through out his life. It was not an easy journey for him, but all his fans and well wishers stood by him till his last. We respect all your sentiments and emotions and hope you will also understand our feelings and pain we are going through now.

Everyone has their own way of assessing / grading - artists / singers and comparing them to a famous personality, it’s left to the individuals and their way of thinking. The audience has every right to do so. For me My Father is my Pride and He is the Only One, For me He is incomparable. I’m sorry if I hurt anyone’s feelings but it is unintentional.

With all my due respect to Wilson Olivera and his fans, a humble request to all. How so ever you would like to congratulate Felicitate or wish Wilson please do so, He deserves it but without bringing my Dad’s name in Picture. Just to justify some things some people have penned down some things here about my Dad - Wilfy Rebimbus which is not true.

Dear Victor, Pope Benedict XVI did not bestow the title “Father of Konkani music” to my Dad but it was Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, The English translation of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice is "For Church and Pope",. It is the highest award which a lay man could get from the head of the church. You have questioned if Dad played any instrument? I think you must study about a person and then put it on a public forum. He played Harmonium /Organ and he has learnt Carnatic music.. He sings in notations using the notes Do Re me….which any ordinary singer cannot do unless trained in that. Through the help of the Jesuits Priests he was very well educated in Music.

Dear Mr. Jerome, as per your note - “ 'Konkan Kogul' award bestowed on the Great legend Wilfy too was from then a very little known Konkani Organization”. In 1971 how many associations / organizations where present in Konkani? This title was bestowed on Dad by the then Bishop Late Rt Rev Basil D’Souza. The organization “Roop Raag” had taken this initiative to bestow this title on Dad involving the Mangalorean Konkani people. People had sent many titles and the best one was chosen...

I do not agree with Mr. Rohan D’Silva’s comment. The title “Sangeeth Sardar” can be even given to an artist who composes lyrics and tunes the songs, without the knowledge of music an artist can’t tune a song. Wilson Olivera tunes his songs by his own and has contributed his talent to Konkani music. So, for sure he deserves the title “Sangeeth Sardar”. Well, today if Konkani music has become rich, the main credit goes to our Konkan Kogul Late. Wilfy Rebimbus. Was he playing any instruments? But he has composed and tuned many songs in Konkani and made Konkani music rich. Few months back Pope Benedict XVI bestowed the title “Father of Konkani music” to Late. Wilfy Rebimbus. Same way what’s wrong in giving the title “Sangeeth Sardar” “Sangeeth Samrat” or “Sangeeth Guru” to a lyricist / musician who contributes his talent to Konkani Music.
Definitely there are many artist /musicians in Mangalore who have created some excellent compositions and have maintained low profile. Same way even Wilson Olivera has kept low profile itself, but public /media has compared his voice or composition with Wilfy Rebimbus… its not by him.
I have heard all the albums of Wilson Oliver and I can say there is a high quality in his lyrics. Most of his songs are meaningful, he deserves this title.
Instead of being jealous or pulling down an artist by writing such comments, let’s support a Konkani artist and make Konkani music rich.

The comments of Rohan D'Souza clearly displays his ignorance, if not jealousy. Rohan, please undestand the meaning of the word 'Sangeet' before making such immatured comments. Sangeet is not only music and its not fair to make a comment that to get an award such as Sangeet Sardar, Sangeet Guru or Sangeet Samrat, one must know how to read and write the notations. You have mentioned some great names which do not belong to Konkani. Please understand that for them too their community gave such awards. If we have people like you, none in Konkani will ever get any award. Also note that 'Konkan Kogul' award bestowed on the Great legend Wilfy too was from then a very little known Konkani Organization. You would have surely objected to it then, but don't you agree today that this great man deserved this award and surely much more?? Also please go back and check that some of the great names you have mentioned to display your vast knowledge are copying from many other languages. Because Wilson's voice resembles that of the legend Wilfy, people have started comparing them. That will not defame Wilfy, but rather may help people to remember this great man. Please grow up and support the Konkani cause and the talented artists instead of writing such hate mails on a popular website like daijiworld. This should be your resolution for the new year.

    Happy New year to you.

I do not think we can compare a Legend like Shri Wilfy to anyone as far as his compositions are concerned. His compositions are unique and inimitable. You are right Sooraj, every artist should have their own style or identity. There are many artists/musicians in Mangalore who have created some excellent compositions but have maintained low profile.

Awarding titles like “Sangeeth Sardar” “Sangeeth Samrat” “Sangeeth Guru” etc. the word ‘Sangeeth’ should be used only for immensely talented and excellent musicians who can read, write music notations, play various musical instruments or music composers, arrangers like Shri Illayaraja, A.R.Rehaman or conductor like Ralph Burns, Michel Colombier etc.,

Awarding such titles should be decided only by music oriented expert judges and not by fans or organizations who create such titles and award them as and when they want.

In this way they are not only insulting Music but also the artist where such awards do not fetch any importance especially in Konkani Music.

It was a very good show with good meaningfull songs. @ Suraj:> Wilson has kept his own identity. People compare him to Wilfy coz his voice resembalce to him. That doesn't mean he is copying his voice but its quality is near to him. And also he has not copied Wilfys lyrics nor tunes. ALl the songs had good tunes and rich with lyrics. All the songs were different in themes as well as music. I don't know what made you to compare that all songs sounded similar. Right from his first album he has maintained the quality of Konkani music.
