Mangaluru: Five-day 'Chendu' event of Polali temple annual festival concludes

Mangaluru, Apr 12: 'Chendu’, one of the unique features of the month-long Goddess Rajarajeshwari Temple, Polali annual festivities, is played for five days. The final Chendu of this year was played in Polali on Monday April 11.

The festivities of this temple continue for a month. The 'Chendu' began on April 7. After special pooja was performed to the deity. Temple priests, administrators, and devotees along with the music of the band, 'Kombu' tossed the 'Chendu' to the field. Ammunje and Malali villagers took part in the game.

Initially, the youth played the game, followed by senior citizens of these villages who took part in the game. Hundreds of people viewed the game. When the game started, a youth was the cynosure of all eyes as carried his aged relative to a safe place. Maharathosava will be held on Tuesday April 12.

Goddess Rajarajeshwari Temple in Polali is one of the ancient, grand temples in Karnataka coast, which continues to protect and project rich cultural heritage of the region.

    Those days in the village youngsters/ men after finishing daily work used to gather in the big field and play chendu made out of hay (dry grass). and volley ball 🏀 Rita - Germany any flash back from Mermajal ?

    So lovely ! Indian culture & traditions are so valuable, precious and has been followed from generation to generation ! I remember having witnessed such event during my secondary school. My cousin had taken me to watch the event. with lots of pakoda and watermelon to quench the thirst. Palali River. wishing them great fun & enjoyment. 🤠
