School reopening on May 16 doubtful, govt studying move to extend holidays

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (SS)

Bengaluru, May 7: The summer vacation for schools is likely to be extended due to extreme heat wave conditions sweeping across the country.

In Karnataka too, school students are likely to enjoy an extended holiday beyond May 16, the date for reopening of schools.

There are hardly a few days of summer holidays left for the students. Parents and teachers are of the view that children may suffer from health issues due to extreme heat conditions if classes commence on May 16. There is a likelihood that the holidays may be extended for the same reason, it is learnt.

Every year, schools used to reopen for the new academic year on May 29. This year, the education department had decided to cut the number of summer holidays for schools to compensate for the coronavirus pandemic that affected regular school activity during the last two years.

In Haryana, schools have started functioning from May 4 between 7 am and 12 noon instead of the earlier timings of 8 am to 2.30 pm. In Punjab, schools have announced summer vacations starting May 14 due to extreme heat conditions.

Meanwhile, Associated Managements of Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) secretary Shashi Kumar wrote letters to chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and education minister to give stress on reforming children’s education. “Private schools should not postpone the date of reopening for any reason. From 2019-20 to present academic year, educational activities from first to 10th grade are minimal. This will cause mental, physical and academic injustice on students of Karnataka,” he stated in the letter.

Wow our education minister... Last 2 years suffered less classes so now extensions. Are they teaching last year subjects since the students completed exams. Learn from our neighbouring state how they handle education systems. Most of them completed the exams on time. Even their government schools prompt on studies.
