Puttur: Cook Agnes Pramila D’Souza falls into sambar vessel, dies - School denies allegation

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (MS)

Puttur, Jun 15: A case is filed in city police station here with regards to the death of an assistant cook of midday meal scheme of falling into the hot sambar vessel that was kept ready for serving for school children.

Agnes Pramila D’Souza (37), resident of Malaru in Kuriya village, who used to work as assistant cook at St Victor’s School of the city is the unfortunate victim of this tragedy. She is survived by a daughter and a son.

The school authorities say that Agnes did not die of falling into the sambar vessel, but because of too much consumption of liquor.

In the complaint filed with the police by brother of deceased Agnes, she fell into the vessel of Sambar on May 30 as she slipped into it. As the hot sambar fell on her body, she received burn injuries and was rushed to Adarsh hospital in the town. However, doctors at the hospital advised the family to take her to Mangaluru for higher treatment. Agnes was admitted to Wenlock hospital of Mangaluru and was under treatment. However, she succumbed to the burn injuries on June 12 evening.

Defending the school, Rosalin Lobo, head teacher of the school said, “Agnes had come to school at 11 am on May 30. She did not do any work. As she was inebriated, she was not allowed to go near the kitchen. She was sitting on the playground near the kitchen. Later, she went to the kitchen asking for gruel. Our staff also accompanied her.

“When Agnes was going to the kitchen, her legs brushed the vessel in which hot sambar was kept ready to be served to the students. She sustained injuries to two parts of her body. Though Agnes refused to go to hospital, we took her forcefully to taluk government hospital in Puttur and then to a private hospital again. From there, she was taken to Wenlock hospital.

“There is a record in which the doctor said that the burns are just 18% on the body and she will get cured within a week. However, Agnes consumed liquor along with the medicines. That is why the burns were not cured and she died. Liquor was the reason for her death.

“Several attempts were made to bring Agnes out of alcohol addiction but they were futile. It was decided by the management of the school to suspend her from work from the month of June,” she said.

Vishnuprasad, Akshara Dasoha official said, “Preliminary information is collected from the school. According to them, assistant cook Agnes had consumed huge amount of alcohol on the day of the incident. She sustained 18% burns when her leg brushed the sambar vessel in the kitchen. There is also information that Agnes died of heavy alcohol consumption and not burn injuries. A comprehensive investigation will be done and report will be sent to the higher authorities.”

So easy to blame a woman on the basis of consumption of alcohol. Whichever school this is doesn’t want to pay any coverage to the family I presume. But it doesn’t add up, very one sided! Overconsumption of liquor and having burns won’t lead to death on the same day. It builds up, after a while, right? Only autopsy will show.

Many people quietly slip out during duty hours and have a quick drink at the nearest gadang and come back; some even bring parcel and slowly have it in the washroom!

School headmistress maybe want to escape from responsibilities. Some negligence maybe happened . If she was drunk why they allowed her to enter kitchen. Bymistake if she puts something to food item... then students life will be danger. If CC camera is not inside of kitchen atleast school ground might be there... management can check CCTV footage...really she lost control on her body due to drinks or not.

Alcohol addiction is like any other addiction and is considered as a disease as only few drinkers get addicted! It can be cured by psychiatric medication after finding the cause, counseling, and attending AA meetings! Most people suffering from anxiety and depression fall prey to this addiction; but it's surprising that she could get alcohol supplies while in hospital, which sounds fishy!

Every cell phone user is at risk of developing an addiction to their device. Whether it's online games, social media, text messaging, or emails, there are many ways that smartphone apps attract users and make it hard to look away. Teens are more likely to become addicted to cell phones than any other age group.

How did the school allow her entry to school premises when she reported to work in inebriated state, let alone allow her to go near sambar vessel. Very difficult to buy the story as is. (a) Alcohol reaction to medicine (can be established by Wenlock). (b) If it was just 18% burns, what was the need to take to Mangalore for treatment? All it required was hygine and treatment to contain infection. (c) Most importantly, the school in-charge must be suspended because he allowed a inebriated staff to work if in fact their story is true.

Vincy....sir...True....whatever.....tragedy has happened. She has given service ...standing in front of the fire and cook food. If she consumed that much alcohol, was it possible to come from home ? Was she in senses to attend the duty. Definitely, she might have gone either by bus or by walking.....she didnt fall anywhere according to their statement on alcohol?? Instead of blaming now accept the truth and help her family. When such things happen we forget we are Christians and go to any extent to defend us. She must have had in the previous night....When authorities knew she is consuming liquor, should have sent her back....Walk in the footstep of Saint to which your school is dedicated.....dont spread her biography viral....

Is it okay if men consume mire alcohol? Its quite valid and absolutely fine if men die due to overuse of alcohol. Isn't it? But if it is the woman who dies due to the same reason, there will be a lot of people commenting on how women need to be. Right? Anyway here we do not even know if it was due to alcohol or burn... However, request you to stay sensitive with your comments and don't judge people too quickly.
