Udupi: Conch shaped snails reappear in Parkala, residents face difficulties

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (JS/EP)

Udupi, June 16: Conch shaped African snails have made their appearance again at most of the houses in the first and second cross of Devi Nagara of Parkala causing anxiety among the local people.

These snails are seen on the border wall of B M School, walls of Anganwadi and around the compound wall of the residence of Abdul Sattar.

Abdul Sattar said that they had used nine sacks of rock salt last year but the snails did not go away. “They are spread on the house wall and have started eating the saplings when it started raining this year. People are facing problems due to these molluscs as the municipal council did not take any action last year. They are mostly seen on the walls of B M Parkala school and Anganwadi,” he said.

“The saliva of the snails has a foul smell that seems to spoil the environment and the surroundings. They crawl on land when it rains. Their movement increases during the nights. They are seen inside the house as well. Municipal council health officials should sprinkle insecticides and find a permanent solution for the menace,” urged social activists Ganesh Raj Saralabettu and Rajesh Prabhu Parkala.

We too have such snails here. They are called wine snails.mostly they are in area where graps vinyard. There are some Turkies which swallow snails.Try this But you have to keep a bowl of water near by .before they swallow snails ,they first dip them in water wash in water and then swallow. We call them Indien Turkey. These snails love water .Thatswhy keep a water outside of the house.so that they dont come inside. There are other type of snails which die with salt. But problem is whole earth will be with salt and not eligable for doing any gardening or vegetables. So dont put salt on earth.

In puttur (D.K) some region filled with the African snail . since it is the major problem we are facing here . All though it will be killed by sprinkling salt on it.,It is very difficult because it spread over every where. At one time it will hatch more than 100 eggs witch is yellow in colour. These African snail 🐌 will create more prob in vegetable planting and areca plantation. Govt should take a action and direct a agricultural department for the further action.
