Mangaluru: Communally sensitive area of city to be named after Savarkar

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 21: Preparations are going on secretly, under the leadership of BJP MLAs of Mangaluru, to legally rename the junction of communally sensitive area of the city after Savarkar.

All preparations are underway to rename Suratkal junction as Savarkar Junction. This has been proposed in the council meeting of MCC also. This was proposed last year by MLA Dr Bharath Kumar Shetty. In the midst of opposition the proposal was passed in the council. Now the proposal is with the standing committee of the MCC. It will be sent to government for approval within few days. Once approved plans are made to rename Suratkal Junction as Savarkar junction. There is fear that Suratkal, which was tense after the murder of FAzil, will become a stage for another friction.

Responding on the subject, MLA Dr Bharath Shetty said, “Local corporators had proposed to rename Suratkal junction as Savarkar junction. Many hindu organizations including Bajrang Dal and HJV had appealed to me for the same. I sent a proposal for the same to MCC on my letterhead. It was presented in the council legally and passed. Now it is with the standing committee of the MCC. Later, after getting passed by the standing committee, it will be presented to the government and again get passed in the council. Congress and SDPI had vehemently opposed this proposal in the council.”

Shetty further said, “We do not know why Congress and SDPI are opposing the renaming. Definitely no one can bring a stay on the matter of renaming a junction. According to law, it is the name of a freedom fighter. Siddaramaiah is speaking about Muslim areas. Through statements of this kind, he is provoking.

He said, "There should not be any issue in renaming the junction after a freedom fighter. Our government has prevented any communal violence. We will not allow riots to happen. Leaders of the party are supporting this matter as it is a noble deed. They say that this will give information about Savarkar to general public. We will rename Suratkal junction as Savarkar junction, come what may.”

What message these BJPee MLA's want to convey to next generations...? a coward of 6 time apology letter writer to British, a 60 Rs pensioner as Informant of British , Gandhiji's conspirator....? can be a freedom fighter..? Andh-bhakto please open the history book of India before naming anything. If History says he was a freedom fighter no one will oppose for sure. How long BJPee can fool the fellow Indians in the current era where rape/murder convicts are honoured with garland as rape/murder is a great acheivement in BJPee rule...

They don’t have any achievements to boast about. They are unable to control rising prices, double digit inflation or widespread unemployment. They just want to keep people busy with controversies one after the other before the election. First it was hijab, then halal, then beef, then anti conversion and now Savarkar. I can only say we the people of Karnataka are absolutely dumb, mute and brainless.

Then why there are no proposals for name the circle as Tipu Sultan, he too was a freedom fighter. Don't waste time naming circles rather focus on betterment of traffic around the circle. Even Savrkar would be pleased Naming a circle doesn't complete your job as people representative and duties of corporator doesn't end. Be fearsome and better society like the Wodeyars and Tipu. One day circle will have automatically your name too.

Changing the names of places , circle, junctions is creating only problems and destroying the communal harmony, which is present governments trump of politics. First of all what is the need for changing the name????? Just to gain the popularity for BJP??. Voters has to think twice and demand for good roads and facilities not to waste money and time on unwanted things like name changing.

Are there no freedom fighters from Mangalore. Why don't they give such names to all the pot holes in Mangalore. Time to vacate such people ASAP.

On Savarkar .. let’s forget narratives For arguments sake .... About pre independence ..all that he has done .. not done ....... We come to Post independence..... Post Independence he lived another 20 years .. What were his achievements..India was free .. Except he was for the initial years defending himself on the mahatma ‘s Murder conspiracy.. managed on certain technical grounds to get a court release .. Disowned Godse although records show there was a strong association.... Are there any great institutions he built .. ?? 20 years after 1947 ...

I wish if people were educated about Veer Savarkar. Since pre-Independence, Savarkar was on the wrong side of Indian National Congress and this Congress inspired allergy towards him is only the hangover of that. Unlike the INC leaders, he spent more time behind bars including banishment to Andaman prison and was not a believer of non-violence to drive away British. Neither violence or non-violence actually helped India gain independence, but it was an outcome of second world war. I wish, people were educated first about Veer Savarkar and what are those ideals that we want to emulate and hence naming the circle after him. Without this, it would only only go on to show that Veer Savarkar's name is used for political slug fest and probably make his name needlessly even more controversial. And the idea of comparing him (1883~1966) with Tipu (1751~1799) is even more ridiculous. At the most he should be compared with leaders of INC of that time. Nehru was afraid of both SC Bose and Savarkar. One was solved by Russian Gulag, the other was solved by propaganda. And we are still using that propaganda till date.

Dear Hari, Mumbai, Thank you so much for your comment. More the disagreement, the better. Even if 50% of those who disagree go for data and fact, the purpose is served. My manager reporting to me, once complained about my Muslim colleague that he only does 5-wakt namaz and does not work. I went and had a good look at data. In Hindu tradition, we have a concept of sandhyavandana (done at a time when day meets night or vice versa, which is 2 times in a day). Muslims have a further level of granularity (Night, Morning, Mid-day, Evening and night) and whence 5 Sandhyavandana. It is impossible to have 5 namaz during working hours; and hence told my manager that he should complain about work not accomplished and not the deed of a pious man. In all my comments, I press on data and fact. I may be wrong and if someone corrects me, what is wrong in being corrected? Let the disagreement come in troves, if 50% decide to have a good look at data, we on a whole will be a better society.

What do you expect from such politicians when you have zero achievements to show on the markscard? These people don't realise that the communal fire they set burns everyone and not just one community. When riots happen some.poor Fazil or Praveen will be stabbed when people like these will be roaming in their AC luxury vehicles with police convoys. Poor bus owners and rickshaws who earn eveyday bread have to sit at home, and more than anything, the peace of mind of an entire city is lost. Nothing comes out of fighting in the names of Savarkars and Tippy Sultans,it's just vehement foolishness. I earnestly hope the voters realise it, enough for now. The potholes on the highways are killing people eveyday and this is what the representatives are busy with. Shame..!!

A responsible govt should take every citizens views and opinion to come to a decision. It’s inappropriate if there is high tension and sensitivity in govt’s decision to carry out anyway if it creates unnecessary violence. It will become a future trigger point for all untoward incidents and for law and order situation which will again create communal and social disharmony. Govt must get opinion of scholars, experts, academics etc and not a bunch of few anti social element’s organizations.
