Udupi, Sep 10: A boat that went into deep sea for fishing from Malpe fishing port sank as some hard object hit its bottom. All the seven fishermen on the boat were rescued by boats that were fishing in the nearby waters.

Sri Durga Vaishnavi boat had left Malpe fishing port on August 29 night. As it was arriving back to the port on September 8, it hit some hard object near Gangolli beach which created a huge gape and water started gushing inside the boat. Though the men on board tried to empty the water, the flow of water was heavy and the engine of the boat failed. The boat sank into the sea.

The fishing boats Swarnamangala, Samruddhi and Samudratanaya, who were fishing in nearby waters came to the rescue of the fishermen of Durga Vaishnavi boat. The boat which had a huge gape in the bottom was pulled using three other boats but it got completely sunk near Hangarakatte. The loss is estimated at Rs 50 lac.
