Your life's path is not dictated by others. Success is achieved through hard work and wise choices. The freedom to choose our own direction is a gift. Many Mangaloreans have returned to Dakshina Kannada after working abroad. New businesses have been established in this beautiful region.

A few years ago, I met Dolphy Mascarenhas from Barkur. He runs a fast-food restaurant chain called ‘Hotchix’, with outlets in India and abroad. Multi-talented, Dolphy plays multiple musical instruments such as keyboards, guitars, drums, and saxophones. He is also known for composing songs, and unique farming ventures. Beyond his professional achievements, Dolphy makes significant contributions to the community. He dedicates his time as a choirmaster for nine parishes in Udupi Diocese and serves as a master of ceremonies and a toastmaster. His ability to balance these diverse roles is remarkable.

Dolphy has created the first-ever kids' band in Udupi. He is currently one of the judges and the entire program director of "Swara Sagara," the biggest singing competition on Daijiworld. He is the owner of "Krop Ai," a vertical farming start-up with modern technology in Udupi, supported by the startup Karnataka elevate idea2 poc 2023 and was rewarded as the winner among thousands by the Karnataka government. 10 were elected in the bio-tech sector and Krop Ai was one of them. Mr. Faresh and Clavin, young engineers, are the brains behind this project, and Dolphy has taken up this prestigious venture. Their return enriches the community.

I asked Dolphy how he juggles all his responsibilities. With a humble smile, he replied, "It's God's blessing." His dedication and humility are truly inspiring.

During the monsoon vacation, I had the opportunity to interview him to share his story and inspire the younger generation to follow in his footsteps.

1.Can you describe your early life and upbringing in Kudru, Barkur?

Dolphy: I was born and raised in Kudru, Barkur, within a loving household alongside my parents, Robert and Benedicta Mascarenhas, and my two younger brothers. "I grew up in a close-knit family where I developed strong values and received constant support, which has shaped who I am today.

2.How did you become interested in joining a hotel management course in the hospitality field?

Dolphy: After completing my education at Mahaveera College in Moodabidri, I was drawn to a career that combined my interests in hospitality and management. Studying hotel management in Mumbai was a fantastic experience! It equipped me with many valuable skills, which launched a successful journey in the hospitality industry.

3.How did your tenure at Carnival Corporation UK influence your career path?

Dolphy: Over 17 years at Carnival Corporation UK as a Food and Beverage officer, I gained invaluable experience in managing large teams and delivering exceptional service. This experience laid a solid foundation for me to later establish my own chain of restaurants upon returning to my hometown.

4.What inspired the creation of your Hotchix restaurant chain?

Dolphy: After noticing lack of high-quality fast-food choices in my area, I approached Dr Gregory Lobo , my colleague who worked with me on the cruise . His expertise , support and guidance helped me create Hotchix. With the help of my dedicated customers, our initial location grew into several others, spanning Udupi, Manipal, Mumbai, Dubai, Bangalore, and Delhi (Noida).

5.How did your interest in indoor farming lead to your current venture?

Dolphy: Motivated by sustainable agriculture, I ventured into indoor farming specializing in leafy greens and strawberries. This venture lets me bring fresh, healthy food to the community, a thrilling new step in my entrepreneurial path.

6.Can you share your experience as a choirmaster in various parishes?

Dolphy: Serving as a choirmaster at churches including Holy Family Church in Andheri East and Mother of Sorrows Church in Udupi has been deeply fulfilling. Currently leading choirs at Perampalli Church and Attur Basilica, I enjoy guiding choir members in vocal techniques and harmonization, integrating my passion for music with community service.

7.What is your approach to music and song writing?

Dolphy: I approach music and song writing with a blend of emotion and creativity, drawing from personal experiences. Teaching at Trinity School Perampalli and Kalattur Parish, as well as judging competitions and training students in various instruments, enriches my journey as a musician.

8.Could you tell us about 'Rockin Angels' and its significance?

Dolphy: 'Rockin Angels' is Karnataka's first kids' band, formed and trained at my home. This group, featuring talented children including my daughters Samantha and Delicia, has performed successfully, with Samantha earning acclaim in the Daijiworld Singing Reality Show. Nurturing young talent through 'Rockin Angels' is a rewarding endeavor.

9.What are your future aspirations in both your career and personal life?

Dolphy: Moving forward, I am focused on expanding Hotchix and developing my indoor farming business. Personally, I aim to further hone my musical skills, inspire others through teaching and performance, and maintain a fulfilling balance between my professional endeavors and family life. Continuous learning and growth remain central to my aspirations in all facets of life.

10.Before we conclude, could you share a bit about your family support, your wife, and your daughters?

Dolphy: My family is my rock, with my wife, Sarita, providing constant support in all my ventures. Our daughters, Samantha and Delicia, bring immense joy and pride with their talents, especially in music, inspiring me to strive for excellence.

Dolphy, that's awesome to hear about your work and family! Thanks again for taking the time to chat and share your wisdom.

Dolphy: Thank you, Stany, for your kind support and recognizing my services and activities towards the community.

Dolphy Mascarenhas exemplifies how dedication and leveraging one's experiences can lead to entrepreneurial success, as seen in his thriving Hotchix restaurant chain. Dolphy’s story is a testament to the magic that happens when you blend diverse interests with a desire to help others. From music to agriculture to community service, his journey shows the power of a well-rounded skill set in crafting a life of purpose and impact. For aspiring entrepreneurs, Dolphy exemplifies the potential to achieve both business success and positive societal change through hard work, humility, and a commitment to giving back.
