The Importance of Lifestyle

The best definition of lifestyle is the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, and economic level that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group. Living a healthy lifestyle can help prevent chronic diseases and long-term illness. Feeling good about yourself and taking care of your health are important for your self-esteem and self-image.

Understanding Cancer: From Ancient Times to Present

The Oldest Description of Cancer: Some of the earliest evidence of cancer is found among fossilized bone tumors and human mummies in ancient Egypt. Growths suggestive of bone cancer, called osteosarcoma, have been seen. Cancer of the bony skull, indicative of head and neck cancers, has also been found.

The origin of the word "cancer" is credited to the Greek physician Hippocrates (460-370 BC), who is considered the "Father of Medicine." Hippocrates used the terms carcinos and carcinoma to describe non-ulcer-forming and ulcer-forming tumors.

Cancer in the 19th Century: The 19th century saw the birth of scientific oncology with the use of the modern microscope to study diseased tissues. Rudolf Virchow, often called the founder of cellular pathology, provided the scientific basis for the modern study of cancer. This method not only allowed a better understanding of the damage cancer had done but also aided the development of cancer surgery. Body tissues removed by the surgeon could now be examined, and a precise diagnosis could be made. The pathologist could also tell the surgeon whether the operation had completely removed the cancer.

The Acronym “CAUTION” is used to describe the symptoms of cancer:

Change in bowel or bladder habits
A sore that does not heal
Unusual bleeding or discharge
Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere
Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing
Obvious change in wart or mole
Nagging cough or hoarseness

Precautions to Prevent Cancer:

Do not smoke.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Exercise regularly.
Eat a healthy diet.
Protect yourself from infections.
Get screening tests done regularly.

Unhealthy Causes of Cancer

Diet is just one of the lifestyle factors that influence the risks of developing cancer. An unhealthy lifestyle, including the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, exposure to radiation, chemicals, and other poisons, contributes significantly. Cancer has become so widespread and common that at least 1 in 50 people we come across have cancer.

Conclusion

I would like to conclude this article by saying, “Prevention is better than cure. Take care of your health and take care of your family too.”

Very informative article; congrats! You have missed out the most important cause of environmental pollution, contamination of the food chain with carcinogens & hormones, and heavy metal poisoning in drinking water, also side effects of many prescription drugs etc. You would be surprised to know that off late there has been a big increase in lung cancers in people who have never smoked! Recently I was listening to an interview of a CVT surgeon who was emphatically saying that in the last five years he has never seen a pink lung (very healthy) in any of his patients; he was of the opinion that it was caused by severe air pollution! Also certain viruses like HEP B & C, and HPV (it has overtaken smoking as the #1 cause of throat CA in the US) cause of cervical CA (vaccine available)! Radon gas, which is naturally found is also a big cause of lung CA. Also there have been rapid advances in diagnostic tools with the entry of AI in medical diagnosis; many specific biomarkers have been developed to diagnose cancers much before they are diagnosed with conventional techniques! BTW; best & simplest test for breast CA is BSE, & DRE for prostate CA! Thanks for reading my post; wishing you ATB in your writing... talent ☺️☺️🙏🙏
