Moodbidri’s 'Kannada' hotelier ‘Ammiyanna’

November 12, 2024

Meet Raghuveera, who is locally known as Ammiyanna from Mijar, Moodbidri. He is a small hotelier with a big heart for Kannada. Every year on Karnataka Rajyotsava he gives food for free to every visiting customer, which goes around to 100-150 happy customers and has been doing this for the past 15 years. This is mainly because of his love for Kannada, thus, giving honor and service to his culture.

If one ever visits his hotel for good local food, one will notice it is a one man’s show. Anniyanna is the one who cooks, cleans and serves the food. His customers are usually locals around Mijar and is served piping tea and coffee with homely breakfast food in the morning and vegetable fritters in the evening.

He used to work at a hotel in Mysuru for around 20-25 years and came back to his hometown in Mijar to start the hotel near Shri Gopalakrishna Temple. He begins his preparations of the day at 7.00 am and opens shop at 9.00 till 1.30 pm and opens again at 3.30 pm till 7.00 pm. During the grand opening of Ram Mandir, Ayodhya, he wished to celebrate it with everyone by giving away food for free.

The year of 2020 was faced with uncertainty and difficulty due to the COVID 19 pandemic, however Ammiyanna reduced the cost of his food items from Rs 24 to Rs 20, to help people alleviate their sufferings. For the recognition of his selflessness and concern to his land and its people, he was conferred the Kalkura Prathishtana by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Kannada Sahitya Parishad.

Miya you have done an excellent job by exploring local personalities. There are quite a few people who contribute to the betterment of the society and are unknown. Writeups like this would throw light on them in a broader way.
