Where is your attention?

September 3, 2025

In life we meet many people in different phases of our life. Everyone comes into our life for a short period of time. In that short duration, some become part of our joy and happiness, some become our support system, some teach us life lessons, and some bring toxicity.

Now, what our brain does is, we forget the good people who brought joy, happiness, support, and encouragement, but we always remember those who brought negativity and criticized us. It’s a natural human tendency to remember bad things and people all the time, and forget the happy ones.

It takes no effort for things to fall on the ground because of gravity, which automatically pulls things down. But it takes effort to lift fallen things up again because we are going against gravity. The same applies to our relationships as well. It’s effortless for our brain to remember dark experiences, negative people, criticism, and sad moments, but it takes effort to recall the good moments of our life and the people who brought happiness into our lives.

In Hindi, there is a beautiful quote: “Bhoolne wali baatein yaad hain isliye vivaad hain.” The major cause of problems in relationships is that we always remember the fights and misunderstandings and fight over them repeatedly. But actually, we need to forget them and let go. Instead, we have stored them permanently and keep remembering them. On the other hand, the people who brought joy and goodness into our lives—those memories we don’t recall often—are the ones that make us happy. Isn’t it ironic?

We cry, dwell on past sad events, and spoil our present moments. But we never recall our past happy moments and smile again, do we? So let’s reverse it. Let’s store the happiness and good memories permanently in our minds and forget the negativity, while still remembering the lessons learned.

In life, everything depends on our focus and attention. If we pay attention to negativity and negative people, we bring sorrow, sadness, and negativity into our lives and end up depressed, cursing God and life. Instead, if we shift our focus and attention towards all the blessings of our life, the good things, and those people who give us happiness, automatically our life will become a beautiful garden.

Make your mind a garden of blossoms and butterflies, not a thorny cactus plant where every bitter experience will give you pain again and again. Always keep your focus like a camera—forget all the unnecessary things and just be in the present moment. Pay your attention to the work you are doing. Don’t keep a wide focus; just narrow it to what’s important at present.

The logic is simple—yesterday is gone and the future is yet to come. So dwelling on past memories and feeling sad or hurt is of no use. Worrying about the future and stressing over it is also of no use. The only thing we truly have is the present moment. Celebrate and enjoy the present with the people who are in your life, be it your parents, friends, or partner. Live your today to the fullest, and automatically your future will be the brightest.

The present moment is all we have in our control. If we live it to the fullest and give our best, then neither past memories nor future worries will haunt us. Let your worries about the future turn into actions for accomplishing your tasks in the present. Use your energy to think, plan, and act on your goals and aspirations.
