Nov 14: World Diabetes Day

November 14, 2025

“Health is the result of investing in good nutrition”

World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14 to commemorate the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, co-discovered insulin in 1922. This day was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2006.

Myth: “Diabetes is a lifetime disease and you must be on medication for life.”
What if we told you diabetes doesn’t have to be a lifelong sentence? Most people think diabetes is only manageable, not reversible. But with the right knowledge and lifestyle habits, you can transform your life.

Myth: “If I take my medicines on time, I’m managing my illness.”
In India, over 101 million people are now living with diabetes. Why? Because of consuming processed foods, leading a sedentary lifestyle, intake of dairy and animal products, and lack of awareness.

Myth: “People with diabetes should not consume fruits because they contain sugar and could raise their blood glucose.”
Naturally sweet foods like fruits, sweet potatoes, dates, and even whole sugarcane contain fibre, which slows down the flow of sugar into the bloodstream.

Myth: “Diabetes is caused by eating too many fruits, carbohydrates (rice), and sugar.”
The real cause of diabetes is not sugar. High blood sugar is the result of diabetes. The real cause of diabetes is insulin resistance, which in turn is caused by fat. If you minimize bad fats (those not linked to fibre) such as oil, ghee, butter, and all animal products including dairy, you can reverse diabetes and live a medicine-free life. The good fats found in nuts and seeds are bound to fibre and protect your body.

Myth: “If your sugar is controlled with medicine, you’re fine.”
Medicines only manage symptoms, not the root cause. They are not designed to heal; they are designed to manage. When you stay dependent on medicines, the disease stays alive. Healing happens when you change what’s on your plate.

“Eat for the body you want, not for the body you have.”
India is now the diabetes capital of the world. Three out of four deaths are caused by preventable lifestyle diseases. Most of us think medicines are the only way out — they are not.

Myth: “Once you start medicines, you can’t stop, and there is no cure without medicines.”
This is not true. There may not be a pill cure, but the right lifestyle can reverse diabetes. Hundreds of people have reduced or eliminated medications entirely by adopting the right nutrition and lifestyle. A whole-food, plant-based diet is your greatest immunity booster since it acts against diabetes.

“If you don’t make time for exercise, you may have to make time for illness.”
Just having the right diet won’t be sufficient to reverse diabetes. Along with that, exercise is important. Exercise that you enjoy boosts your immunity, while lack of exercise reduces it. Imagine a car that doesn’t move — it will rust, right? Your body is the same. Move it.

“It’s a luxury to have zero health problems.”
We need Vitamin D for our health as well. Sunlight brightens our mood and provides Vitamin D, which boosts immunity. Get energized by spending at least half an hour in the sun every day. Morning or evening sunlight is preferred.

“Fall in love with taking care of yourself.”
Laughter and happiness boost your immunity, while depression undermines it. Read some jokes, watch funny movies, and spend time amidst nature. Don’t take life too seriously. When we truly heal ourselves, we spread healing energy to others in our surroundings as well.

“Every time you eat is an opportunity to nourish your body.”
There is no need to panic for those who have diabetes. Consider it a blessing. It is nature’s way of inspiring and guiding us to turn towards natural living, to follow the right food habits, and to live in harmony with nature and kindness towards animals. The good news is that we can reverse diabetes and live a medicine-free life. We can consume everything that comes from plants, even if it is sweet.

“It’s never too late to start living well.”
Your body is a miracle machine — it can heal itself from anything if you provide it with the right environment to do so. Everyone knows that what you get depends on what you put in. Your health is the best life insurance in the world. There is nothing more important than good health — it is our principal capital asset. Take care before your wealth is extracted by medicines and hospitals.

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.
