Celery of Apiaceae (parsley) plant family Latinized as Apium graveolens is a green vegetable with very good odour and flavor. The juicy stalks and leaves are eaten raw mixed as a component of salads, sometimes cooked too. Ayurveda has recognized this plant as a remedy for various diseases specially for tummy troubles.
Oma in Kannada, Omam in Tamil and Telugu, Ajamod in Hindi, Ayamodakam in Malayalam, Ajwain in Urdu is a herb of choice as told in literatures of Ayurveda for conquering the discomforts like colicky pain, hiccoughs, stomach distensions, worm infestation, hampered appetite and diminished taste perception aroused due to the vitiated Kapha and Vata because of its properties like being bitter, hot. Accordingly the plant is given additional names in Sanskrit as Deepyaka and Kriminashini. Its aromatic principles also are used medicinally identifying it as Gandhapatrika and Hrudyagandha.

Essence of the celery fruit is due to volatile oil with limonene, selinene, thymol, methyl ether, and various phthalides, myristicin etc which are responsible for its aroma and therapeutic properties. One among well-known Ayurvedic formulation with Ajamoda as ingredient is Hingvashtaka Churna which strengthens the digestive system, also relieves flatulence, bloating etc associated discomfort.
Some home remedies are also adopted for a temporary relief .One part of Rock salt is added to two parts of Ajamoda and grounded. This mixture is consumed with warm water before food to tackle the GIT related discomforts. Omam fried in ghee, added with salt and mixed in cooked rice is served to children above one year in tummy discomforts. Omam water available in market is thus very popular in Indian homes. Apart from eating raw, Ajmoda can be formulated as an Arka through distillation process where additional ingredient like camphor etc aromatics is also used in worm infestations.
Effectiveness also documented in asthma, bronchitis and joint pain too. In joint pain, crushed fruits are applied over the affected joints. In bronchitis and asthma, grains of Ajamoda are made as a bolus in a soft cloth, infiltrated with heat and pressed on chest to give comfort to the affected patients. All these remedial measures mentioned here is to inform that celery is medicinal herb. Any formulations of the plant should be used only after recommendations of the expert in Ayurveda.
