War and Peace and War

War and Peace and War

It has been pledged umpteen times before
For the last two thousand years or more
We don’t want any more enmity or war
Yet we’ve been at it, time and time again, year after year

Countless wars have been fought bringing untold miseries
Resulting in widespread destruction, deaths, famine, hunger and disease
Alongside, human development progressed with advanced science
But no success has ever been achieved in eradicating wars and bringing everlasting peace

Warmongers and despots have suppressed their own citizens
By robbing their freedom, subjecting them to slavery
As if the country were their property, they ruled oppressively for decades
Depriving people of their God-given birthright to enjoy liberty

Territories invaded, innocents died, poverty created, but man’s heart never softened
He invented swords, rifles, rockets and missiles in his relentless quest for bloodshed
Despite multitudinous round table talks the human problems remain unresolved
Soon everything was forgotten; he bellowed a war cry and pulled out his sword

Mother and children are seated in front of the TV watching ravaging scenes of war
Young Walter asks “Mama, you stop me when I beat my sister
At the school teacher stops me when I beat my classmate Ester
Why aren’t other leaders stopping the mindless killings when they have such power?”

When the whole world goes to work in its struggle to earn daily bread
Sirens, breaking news, rumours and AI-generated videos create fright
Helpless man suffers at the mercy of the world leaders who seem unconcerned
Is it the original sin that keeps forever the human race in this plight?

When are we going to lay down the age-old, blood-stained sword?
Once and for all, kicking it away and embracing the enemy with a kiss of peace
Aren’t we all created in His own image, made of flesh and blood?
Isn’t it high time we realize that our every breath relies on God’s mercy and grace?

Do we need to look for golden wisdom reaching far out to the sky?
Isn’t the Scripture alone truly sufficient to seek all answers to human cries?
‘Put your sword back in its place for all who draw the sword will die’
‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for tooth’ only lead to increased human miseries
