Give Your Brain a Break

Have you ever wondered, what exactly runs your life as an adult? Is it our parents? Or society? Or leadership at the state, country or global level? The answer is rarely said as the brain, but the fact is, it is! 

The one organ that runs the show of your body, mind and soul. We often look at various physical parts of our body and remain at peace as long as what we see is working fine and feeling fine. We do not think about what's inside of us, unless someone else shares their pain of suffering from various diseases or we have ourselves fall victim to it.

Now the brain isn't like the other organs, it's the command center that ensures that there is energy efficiency and calibration managed throughout the day, top priority being your safety and thrives on creativity and goals. It picks up all the information it receives from the time we are in our mother's womb. This is established through our 5 senses, eyes, ears, mouth, nose and skin. Every experience is stored in our brain and registered as memory based on the intensity and emotions involved during that event. The way rain feels like, the aroma of homemade food, the colors at the beach, the joy of listening to music, our first day at school or welcoming a baby sibling home. On a daily basis, what we feed and how much we feed our sensors determines the health of your brain.

We as humans were designed to take things SLOW. A seed turns into a tree after years of sunshine, rain and soil, a kitten arrives after 9 weeks of being in its mother's womb, creation of gold takes millions of years for that matter... Our caveman ancestors enjoyed hunting for a reward that is simple - Food. The rest of the time, they enjoyed sounds of nature, musical cries of birds and the winds of change in every migration or weather, walked around in groups, relished the fruits and plants along the way, may be a feast on meat or fish; nothing was perfect and nothing was permanent. They constantly moved slow and steady, with clear intention to navigate through life as per the need of the mind, body and soul. Distractions were few! Some towards alertness for the weather or animals, some out of curiosity towards new sounds or ruffling of leaves, rumbles of the sky as a warning to take shelter against the rain or wind. The brain was at ease, reacting and recalibrating the body to what is truly important for your safety.

Fast forward 2026, average of 80 to 100 notifications a day, marketing ads, processed food, chasing status, money, life beyond our capacity, social media likes over reality, our brain is combating a non-stop battle every minute, while the world calls it normal, our brain is dying a slow death. Modern life rewards speed. Faster replies, faster decisions, faster success, faster content, faster productivity. People move from one notification to another without pause, often believing that staying constantly busy is a sign of ambition or importance. 

The human brain processes enormous amounts of information every day. Conversations, social media, advertisements, decisions, stress, memories, worries, deadlines, and sensory stimulation all compete for attention. Even during moments that appear restful, such as scrolling through a phone, the brain remains highly active. Instead of recovering, it continues absorbing information at a rapid pace. This constant stimulation affects cognitive function. The nervous system remains in a heightened state of alertness, making true relaxation difficult. 

The brain, despite its remarkable abilities, was never designed to function without rest. Like every other part of the human body, it needs recovery. Muscles become sore after overuse, eyes become strained after too much exposure, and the nervous system becomes overwhelmed when it is denied calm. In a world that celebrates hustle, one of the healthiest things a person can do is surprisingly simple: give the brain a break. 

For many people, stress becomes familiar. The brain adapts to functioning in survival mode. Motivation begins to depend on fear, urgency, anxiety, or external pressure rather than inspiration or purpose. Some individuals even feel uncomfortable when life becomes calm because their nervous system has become conditioned to chaos. We eventually have trained the brain to operate in stress, which effects the body in form of losses or diseases. 

WHAT CAN WE DO TO STOP THIS CYCLE

Intentional mental rest matters.

Giving the brain a break is not about avoiding responsibility. It is about creating space for recovery so your brain can function more effectively. Research in neuroscience shows that periods of rest improve memory, learning, focus, emotional balance, and problem-solving. During downtime, the brain processes experiences, organises information, and restores mental energy.

Let's do it MANGALORE style

M - MOVEMENT: Ensure you start your day with any form of movement, let the lymphatic drainage happen in your body, mostly achieved in yoga or simple body movements. For some the gym, for some a simple walk, for some could be dancing.

A - ALIGNMENT: Align your thoughts to your words and actions. This leads to behaviour that is righteous and in line with being human to yourself and society. A lot of time is lost in talking of plans versus doing them. Completion of tasks releases dopamine, a reward neurotransmitter in your brain. This release is slow and has no harm to our body. It's an activity of growth. Dopamine is also released when drinking alcohol, which has an adverse effect to the rest of your body. The choice you make determines your health. Therefore, aligning your thoughts to actions that are beneficial for you, will help your brain feel safe and calm.

N - NATURE: Being in nature does wonders to your holistic health. We are blessed with good tropical weather and enjoy greenery, beaches, mountains and scenery. Enjoy while you can.

G - GRATEFUL: Being thankful at all times is a virtue. Some of the healthiest people I have known are the ones that Thank God for everything that occurs in their life and continue living their mission and vision of life for themselves

A - ART: Journaling, prayer, meditation, art, music, cooking and creative hobbies, all support mental recovery. These activities engage the brain differently from passive digital consumption. They encourage reflection, expression, and emotional release. Creating art lights up main parts of your brain and releases several neurotransmitters at once like dopamine, serotonin, endorphins to make you feel rewarded, calmer and emotionally balanced. 

L - LOVE: Our brains love connection and human interaction. Spending time with people who love you, care for you and mean well for you and vice versa are the kind of people we need to give our time and energy. Love heals relationships, emotion state and boosts one's self worth when we love and are shown love in return. The chemical neurotransmitter Oxytocin is released when two people are engaged in conversation, laughter or simply at comfort of each other's physical presence. 

O - ORIGINAL: Be an original. Many of us don't know who we are and what we are chasing. Discovering yourself is the best project you can work on.

R - REST: Rest and recovery, a human brain needs to recover from all of the days information, stress, tasks, challenges, experiences that may be favourable or not. Most people relax through smoking, drinking, doom scrolling, video games, overeating which hinders that brains functioning further, instead of recovery. Sleep is one of the most important forms of mental recovery. During sleep, the brain performs essential maintenance functions, consolidates memories, clears metabolic waste, regulates hormones, and repairs neural pathways. Yet millions of people sacrifice sleep in pursuit of productivity, entertainment, or endless scrolling. People who lack sleep over couple of days, operate at 40 to 50% percent energy, making life difficult for them and people around them.  

E - Energy: The brain ensures you are energy efficient. How can we help secure this energy? With what we feed our sensory inputs and the rest we get. Ensure you feed your brain with rich healthy food. Healthy fats (omega 3s), Protein (Chicken, lentils, Greek yogurt), Gut friendly food, Colourful plate of fruits and vegetables and Carbs that cool the body and has a slow release of sugar. Your brain needs glucose to function, one that is stable and not rushed. Excess sugar creates inflammation which later effects your brain functioning. What we eat, we breathe, we see, we hear and apply on our skin, all influences brain functioning.

True strength includes knowing when to pause. Many mental illness occur in adults and teens due to lack of energy management, emotion support and brain health activities. People who learn how to rest intentionally may think more clearly, relate more deeply, create more meaningfully, and live more sustainably. 

The brain carries every thought, memory, emotion, dream, and decision throughout a lifetime. It deserves care, space, and recovery. It will be your best friend if you learn how to take care of it.  

Give it goals, it will turn them into reality. Give it good sensory exposure, you will have a glow on your face. Give it love, and you will have an aura that is magnetic. Magnetic to attract the right people, right blessings and experiences of life.
