Mangaluru/Udupi, Oct 23: In Coastal Karnataka region, sea erosion seems to be dangerously increasing year after year. High tides during the monsoon have caused severe sea erosion.
The National Coastal Research Centre under the Ministry of Earth Sciences has submitted a report based on the sea erosion pattern witnessed between 1990 and 2016 which states that 22% of the 300-km coastline in Karnataka has been corroded and over the last six years this has been an issue of serious concern.
Experts have suggested that an early and swift action needs to be taken by the officials concerned and the department heads. Sea erosion has caused widespread damage to houses that exist close to the seashore.
Experts say the NH-66 that passes through Karwar's Rabindranath Tagore beach is in danger of getting submerged if steps are not taken to prevent sea erosion from causing damage.
Climate change and global warming have contributed to rise in water level in the seas and the damage caused due to sea erosion has not met with adequate relief measures being doled out to the affected people.
To prevent sea erosion big stones have been kept at the shore along with the use of a kind of creeper but these measures have not yielded the desired results.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said a permanent solution will be put in place to prevent sea erosion during the next three months. The sea wave breaker technology has been adopted to prevent sea erosion.
