Bhiwani, May 23 (IANS): Beijing Olympics bronze medalist boxer Vijender Singh, who married a Delhi girl May 17, has landed in trouble with a police complaint being lodged about the illegal use of the national emblem on the invitation cards of his wedding reception.

A representative of a local NGO has submitted a complaint to the Bhiwani district police chief and to the district administration.

Confirming receiving the complaint, district police chief Ashwin Shainvi told IANS: "Yes, we have received a complaint about the printing of the national emblem on the invitation card of Vijender's reception. I have asked a senior police officer to look into this matter and to submit a report."

"If we find anything wrong, then appropriate action, as per law, would be taken," he added.

Virender's wedding, with a software engineer, was solemnised in Delhi May 17. A reception was held at his native village Kulawas, in Bhiwani, around 300 km from Chandigarh.

The invitation cards were distributed on behalf of Vijender's father Mahipal Singh. There was an image of national emblem with the words "Satyamev Jayate" written under it.

"This is a minor issue and it was printed by mistake," said Manoj, Vijender's brother.

The State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act, 2005 mentions that no person shall use the emblem for private purposes of any trade or business or in the title of any patent, or in any trademark or design, except in such cases and under such conditions as may be prescribed.

The act also states that no person shall use the emblem or any colourable imitation in any manner which tends to create an impression that it relates to the government or that it is an official order of the state or central government.

As per the law, the violator can be awarded rigorous imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of Rs.5,000 or both.
