Mangaluru, Jan 19: The health department has begun a health awareness campaign in the district in the wake of the cold weather that is prevailing. However, health experts say that viral fever is not under control.
The weather department has already warned of cold wave for a week in the state. The minimum temperature in Malnad plateau region is likely to touch 16 deg C around January 19. In addition to chill dense fog is going to make the cold more bitter. Health department says that this weather will create many health issues.
Every year when the season changes from Monsoon to winter heath gets battered. However, this year the weather is harsher. Monsoon continued during winter. However, as January began, health of people of Dakshina Kannada has deteriorated drastically.
The incidents of viral fever in students of rural area of DK has shot up. According to K Sudhakar, deputy director of public education and literacy, viral fever is not seen much in urban areas. However, students of Sullia, Puttur and Beltangady are affected more due to cold wave. Parents are informed through schools to take more care of their wards.
Dr Kishore Kumar, health officer of the district says, “During winter mostly the nose gets blocked. As the breathing is done through the mouth, bacteria gets into the body and fever develops. Those who are above 60 years of age and children need to be more careful during this period. The health department is also giving information on this through primary health care centres.”
