Beltangady, Jun 6: Two families, relatives of each other, fought with wooden sticks and knives over a road repair dispute on Sunday in the taluk. Seven people got injured and are admitted to hospital.

Two families living at Bheemande near Derlakki of Nada village have had a road dispute going on for the past 32 years. On June 4 morning, Obayya Gowda (60), his younger brothers Krishnappa Gowda (50), Keshava Gowda (47) and Bhavani (40), wife of Krishnappa had bought sand in a pick-up vehicle in order to repair the road and were just about to begin.

In the meantime, Poovappa Gowda (70), his wife Lalita (65) and son Vijaya Gowda (38), the relatives of Obayya Gowda, arrived at the spot and a verbal argument ensued between the two families. It soon turned into a weapon fight and both groups hit each other with wooden sticks, sickle, stones and pickaxe.

Krishnappa received injury on the hand, Obayya on head, hand and back, Keshava on head and Bhavani on her head and hands.

Poovappa Gowda, his wife Lalita and son Vijaya Gowda also received minor injuries. All seven are admitted to the government hospital in the town.

Both families have filed complaints in the police station.
