Udupi, Jun 22: “Protection of children’s rights and their implementation is everyone’s responsibility,” said Dr Tippeswamy K T, member of state children’s rights commission.

He was speaking after presiding over a district-level children’s protection committee meeting at the deputy commissioner’s auditorium, Rajathadri here today.

“Children should be protected in schools, colleges and hostels ensuring that they do not face any issues. Children’s helpline number 112 and 1098 should be written mandatorily on the walls of schools, colleges and residential schools. Children’s protection committee, women and children’s guarding committee and children’s education committees should be formed at the village level. Meetings should be held once every three months and the problems of children should be solved. We should ensure that children do not remain out of school. The education department and the local organizations should work towards it. A district-level report should be submitted about power cables passing through school premises. Ensure that child marriages do not take place and that there are no love affairs at the high school level. Implement the Pocso Act in Toto. Victims of child labour and child marriage should be provided social security facilities on priority,” he said.

“The education department should form clubs of children’s rights in schools and ensure that children participate in them. Ensure that transfer letters are not withheld for non payment of school fees,” he said.

District legal services authority member secretary Sharmila S, district panchayat chief project officer Srinivasa Rao, deputy SP Dinaker, women and children development department deputy director Krishnappa, various district level implementation officers and others were present.
