Mangaluru, Jun 24: "The police department is sincerely working to make the city free from consumption of narcotic drugs (banned substances) and its peddling by August 15," said deputy commissioner of police (crime and traffic) B P Dinesh Kumar.
He was speaking at the public grievances redressal meet here on Saturday, June 24 that was organised by the Mangaluru city police.
He said, “In this regard, the people of the city should cooperate with the police and provide inputs and information about drug peddlers to the department. The details of the informers will be kept confidential. The police department along with counsellors and doctors will help those who are addicted to narcotics. If necessary they will be admitted to de-addiction centres. Especially, a few people do have information about the youths consuming drugs and also about the peddlers, but they are unwilling to give information.”
He also added that the police department under the initiative of the police commissioner will go all out to curb the drug menace in the city.
“We are meeting the school and college-going children and also the staff and non-teaching staff to create awareness about the harmful effects of drugs. A police officer's team is active and on the job to curb the use of narcotic substances,” Dinesh Kumar said.
Answering Ravindran, a member of the public to a query regarding police protection for the elderly people who live alone in their independent homes and flats in the city, the DCP said, "Already, the police department is in touch with the elderly who are living alone at home. We are gathering information about such people living in the city."
DCP Dinesh Kumar also said that the police department is taking proper action against those who violate traffic rules. “Cases have been booked against those who drive recklessly, use shrill horns in buses, triple riding on two-wheelers and those who drive two-wheelers without helmets.”
“If the members of the public find any case of traffic violation they can send such photographs and contact us in any of such situations,” he added.
Sandeep Kundar said, "The city buses while traveling on the road are applying sudden brakes which causes problems to those who are on the road in their two-wheelers.”
Ronald D'Souza expressed that there is also a fear in society of communal tensions.
Advocate Naveen stated that vehicles are found on the footpaths affecting free movement of pedestrians.
Several people lauded inspector Bharathi and her team for the people-friendly policing and solving people’s problems in time. Many also lauded Bharathi for her initiative to see that law and order is maintained.
Inspector Bharathi who also spoke said that the owners of houses and flats who give their property for rent should exercise caution and conduct a background check before they take them in.
She said if members of the public have any grievances they can call the police on 112. “The police who are on duty will arrive at the spot in a few minutes,” she said, adding that the public can approach the police station at any time as well.
