Udupi, Jul 30: The Indian Coast Guard unit based in Mangalore and monitoring the west coast, distributed 20 Distress Alert Transmitters (DATs) to the local fishermen in a function held at Malpe Fishermen’s Association here on Friday July 29.
Commandant Rajendra Sabal Singh, after distributing DATs, gave example of the three fishermen who went missing in the Arabian Sea for five days. "The fishermen had left no message with the coastguard while venturing for deep sea fishing in peak monsoon," said Commandant Singh.
He further added that the Mangalore unit of Indian Coast Guard had so far distributed 123 DATs including 85 this year.
Coast Guard officers S C Patnaik and S K Malik, fisheries department officer Suresh Kumar, ports department officer Ganapathy, and local fishermen’s leader Hiriyanna Kidiyoor were present on the occasion.
