Mangalore, Jul 30: Mangalore City Corporation (MCC)’s monthly meeting wound up in just one hour on Friday July 29, after the opposition members created a hullabaloo over Mayor Praveen’s move of granting approval to 60 development works to be taken through State Finance Commission grants.
The monthly meet ended without discussing anything for the common man’s welfare. The uproar on release of SFC grants consumed almost 45 minutes and the remaining 15 minutes was wasted for pointless discussions.
The opposition members criticized that the BJP had discriminated against the opposition members in allocating funds for the State Finance Commission for development works. The grants were not distributed equally among the 60 wards. The wards represented by BJP leaders had been given more preference, they said.
Two independent councilors too joined them and asked Mayor Praveen how could he approve the project with expenditure of Rs 11.93 crore without even consulting the council or seeking its opinion. Mayor Praveen, answering to the opposition councilors clarified that funds were not allocated on the basis of wards but in order to finish up the incomplete projects.
The meeting got over with the chief whip Sudhir Shetty Kannur reading through the decisions taken on the agenda and former mayor K Ashraf tearing up the agenda.
The members did not even have the courtesy of expressing even a word of appreciation to K N Vijay Prakash who was leaving the post of MCC commissioner to take charge as CEO in DK Zilla Panchayat.
