Udupi: Sea returns to normalcy – Traditional boats venture into sea

Udupi, Jul 29: Traditional fishing boats which were anchoring at Malpe sea port for the past 10 days due to inclement weather, ventured into the sea on Friday.

Almost 75% of Disco, Pattebale and trawl boats got down to fishing and brought a huge catch of prawns and Madang fishes.

Though almost all Madang boats got down to the sea on Friday, only 10 boats got Madang fish. It was sold at Rs 32 per kg. Trawl boatmen were a happier lot as they caught prawns in their net.

As the sea turned violent due to incessant rain and high velocity winds, the traditional fishing boats were not allowed to venture into the sea by the district administration and coast guards.

The traditional fishing is going to get over on July 31 as mechanized boats will get down to the sea on August 1. In the olden days, traditional fishing was given priority. However, after the purse seine boats arrived on the scene, the traditional fishing has taken a backseat and is almost on the way of extinction.
